Once saw a gs of 680 in a LR-60, needless to say it was in the winter and we had a healthy tailwind. And I remember years ago in a PA-44 having a neg gs in slow flight config

168kts in a C-172m from 1976 on my way from Del Rio to San Antonio in it. The priest I was flying there took a few pictures. Not digital though but I have it hanging up in my office.

DAMMN Son!!!!  |
I remember about 635 in an ERJ a couple years ago BNA-EWR. Nice tailwind.

think my best was a sustained cruise of 152kts in a 172 from DEN-MSP.
I also have a video of us doing slow flight into the wind down near DAL. The video shows a view down at the ground, and the right main wheel isnt moving, relative to the ground. I'll try to locate it, but dont know how to upload it to here. |

Our tailwind was up around 200kts. I wish I had my god-amn camera. |
SAN-PHX (massive tailwind) 190+ in a 172
PHX-SAN (massive headwind w/ lee side mountain downdraft, Vx climb) ATC asks what type aircraft, I respond CE-172, ATC says "Oh. You're doing about 10 knots GS" Sometimes it would take an hour or more to push through that downdraft, in a Vy or Vx climb. |
I hate fighting strong headwinds in a 172. The worst is looking out the window and watching cars go faster then you.
