I can speak from experience at another (ALPA) property, but it's pretty much the same here.
There is no money to be made doing union work, even if you are getting 90 hours month. You miss out on recall. You miss out on line growth. Also, an MEC member is constantly getting phone calls and emails and texts from pilots. Guys will call to give their opinons, to complain, to offer suggestions, to complain, to get clarification, and to complain. It never stops. There are no days off. There is no "time free from duty". So that 90 hours is covering 30 days of work, not the 15 or so that a pilot could probably hold off and still get the 90 hours. This is the same for any committee members who happen to be on full time for a period of time for whatever reason. I think here, the NC chair is the only committee member who is on full time, and a lot of that is probably paid by ALPA national because they are doing work there as an EVP. I think some other committee members have been full time periodically if work requires it, but not every month.
Most volunteer positions get some flight pay covered for the work they do, but they are very often doing lots of work outside of those times as well, and not getting paid for it. They still fly a regular line, minus a trip or two (maybe).
There certainly have been cases of MEC members and committee members abusing the system, but I really don't see that happening here.

Maybe it means nothing, but they do have the ability to exceed 90 now

I think you’re right about most of what you said, but for full time union work it isn’t simply 90 hours anymore. If you paid attention to the section 4 changes, they negotiated removing the max of 90 hours flight pay loss to “…may not be awarded greater than ninety (90) hours of flight pay loss Pay and Credit.”
Maybe it means nothing, but they do have the ability to exceed 90 now
