Prop Time vs. Jet Time? Upgrade Times also?
I currently have 1200 hours and I am flying the BE1900. I will most likely upgrade in about a year. I have friends flying RJs telling me that my PIC time will not be viewed as equal to Jet PIC time when the time comes to apply with a major. Will that be the case?
I am in my early 30's and not concerned about quality of life for the next three years. I just want to do whatever it takes to get to the majors as quick as possible. It is all about seniority.
Should I stay where I am and upgrade a year from now, or should I jump ship now and try to get jet time.
Also, where would be the quickest place to get that jet time.

I think you should go to the jets ASAP! if you have the chance.
I have the same problem as you, 1200 hrs Dash 8 and can't find a job on a jet because there are more ppl with jet hrs applying.
If you have the chance to change ship, do it!

I disagree. Turbine PIC is turbine PIC. After you get that magical 1000 or 1300 of PIC turbine you can reathink your situation. People get hired at FedEx, UPS, CAL, SWA, etc with all of their PIC time in turboprops. Do you think the military P-3 drivers are not considered? Just my 2 cents.

I have heard of many people recently being hired by majors with no jet time. Turboprop time is turbine time. Currently, I believe only one major has a qualification for turbine time (minimum a/c weight requirement)

PIC TURBINE. Thats what their looking for. You guys sitting right seat in RJs are gonna have about a 5-8 year career pause. Any if your furloughed or cut, you start at the bottom again.
SIC time dosn't mean that much in the long run- only at the company your currently working (senoirity).
There are a lot of RJ co pilots on the street right now sratching their heads.

The other consideration though, is if a person has some FMC time. If you're hiring into a glass cockpit with FMC, you may want to hire people that have experience with it. High altitude/jet/FMC beats low altitude/props with EFIS. All things being equal.

As has been said many times, turbine PIC is turbine PIC. Doesn't matter what it's in. But even more important than having the time and meeting mins is getting networked to people who work for the majors you want to go to. NEVER understimate the power of an internal rec, regardless of the person or level.
