Alaska's hiring process

Looking forward to Alaska's hiring in near future:)

Minimum requirements?

Hiring process e.g. interview, sim, written and so on?

Pilot culture?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Fishfreighter 08-10-2011 07:13 PM

Online application window opens next week.

First class in the schoolhouse in December.

First classes 10-12 pilots a month growing to 16 per month. Estimating 382 pilots hired in the next three years.

No sim check.

Set of 3 interviews:

1. A short phone interview with HR.
2. Board interview with 3 pilots and HR.
3. Personal interview with Chief Pilot.

Requirements:

4 year degree
3000 total
1000 turbine ME

There is a hour conversion formula for military TACAIR guys but not sure what that is (usually 1.2 or 1.3:1)

Hey Fish,
Do you know how the pilot referrals will work. Will there be a link for you all to input one, or do we start hitting up our Alaska buds now to get letters to upload ourselves. Also, any word on the silver bullet? Thanks for any additional info you may have.

Get your AS buds on the stick now. They should attach an electronic copy of your resume to their electronic recommendation letter and send the package to the Chief Pilot.

App window opens next week...get them on it. There are already a bunch of recs on the CPs desk.

The website app link will be open for business next week.

Sunny1 08-11-2011 10:42 AM

Thanks Fish....I'm making calls now!!!

Fish,

Thanks for the info.

Is the app link going to be Alaska's own or Pilotcredintials similar to FedEx and SWA?

Also, are all the interviews conducted in a single day or on multiple visits in phases?

Thanks in advance.

So no PIC requirement?

Longboarder29 08-12-2011 02:10 PM

The 1,000 turbine ME is PIC.

Anyone know if they are going to drop it to 750 turbine ME PIC if you have 2,000 turbine ME SIC?

PermaFo 08-12-2011 02:11 PM

So no PIC requirement?
FWIW from another post:

OBAP=Organization of Black Airline Pilots. Career Fair.
I can't find the mins on the web site either. In Feb. AS was handing out flyers with minimums listed as 1,000 Multiturbine PIC (or Single military jet) or they'll drop the PIC requirement to 750 if you have 2,000 Turbine SIC. Class 1 medical, non-nicotine user, good judgement, good character, etc.
I found you can create the online profile and not apply for a job until it become available.

Is the application window open. If so, where? Didn't see it on their website.

CaptainMe 08-22-2011 09:56 AM

Was there a bid last Friday?

hoover 08-24-2011 12:11 PM

Under Alaska's career website it says that the website will be down for an upgrade between Sept. 1-6. Does anyone know if after this is when the app. window might open. Just wondering so I don't have to check the website everyday.

Moose 08-25-2011 06:56 AM

Chief Pilot told me the application window was going to open sometime today. Of course the company reserves the right to do it whenever they want but this is what he was told. First interviews will be sometime during the second week of September.

Really? I am happy to be able to check the website every day. For a job that I hope for, it is not a big deal. Sorry it is so labor intensive.

Crossin' my Fingas!!

Moose 08-25-2011 10:09 AM

He also said 380 hires at 12/month. Most going to Seattle.

beech_nut 08-25-2011 10:55 AM

Anyone know Alaska's commuter policy? Are you required to list on Alaska or can it be on any airline?

Moose 08-25-2011 11:06 AM

Sept 7th now for hiring window to open. Don't know reason but it is what it is.

Thanks Moose. I have been checking the Alaska site daily in hopes of getting my stuff in there. Another few weeks of clicking and hoping ain't gonna hurt. Thanks again!

Moose 08-25-2011 05:45 PM

The company website is undergoing a major facelift or something of that nature. It will be down till Sept 7th. That's the word I'm hearing.

You have to have two flights to get to base. There is nothing in the contract that says it has to be "on line".

Personal experience says CS respects off line commute attempts. Your mileage may vary.

Pirate 09-06-2011 05:25 PM

Doesn't look like anything has posted yet. Anyone in the know, know anything?

hazrd 09-09-2011 11:58 AM

just checked, and still no "pilot" posting on the careers portion of the website. Am I looking in the right place?

I did login and store my generic info, (name, address, etc.) but haven't found anywhere to state hours/experience. Guessing that will be job specific.

it is supposed to be the main careers page, correct?

atr42flyer 09-14-2011 09:04 AM

any word on Alaska?

EP11 09-14-2011 09:09 AM

Email from HR says soon.

atr42flyer 09-14-2011 09:55 AM

how do you get said email from HR? have you applied before?

EP11 09-14-2011 10:53 AM

Just what I hear from AS buddies.

hoover 09-14-2011 01:28 PM

thats what I heard from AK buddies two weeks ago. Are they going to go through the guys who got reccomendations from people who work there first beore the app opens up? Or just throw everyone into the same pile?

Thrill 09-14-2011 03:12 PM

Internal rec's first, then the "general public"

Last I heard about 100 internal "Cap'n Kids" and 30% or so will be Horizon.

TherealOC 09-19-2011 07:47 PM

any word on hiring here?? Last I heard was right after labor day. Whats the reason for the delay?

Sunny1 09-20-2011 04:36 AM

I was wondering the same thing myself. I talked to an Alaska captain who is helping me out with an LOR and he said "One thing about Alaska......nothing happens fast here". I took that to mean be patient and keep checking the website for the job posting. Good Luck!!!

Twisted Steel 09-23-2011 03:52 PM

With the frequency with which I have been visiting the career opportunities page at Alaska Airlines website I feel like a stalker. No flying jobs posted yet but the more days that pass the more attractive the other jobs posted there look. I said to myself just the other day...." yeah, I could be a customer Service Rep in Barrow". Excellent strategy on Alaska Airlines part.

QX400 11-03-2011 09:19 PM

Anyone know if there are more interviews scheduled for this month?

Fishfreighter 11-04-2011 09:52 AM

That's absolutely true. Have you ever heard the saying, "Prior planning prevents poor performance." That doesn't apply to AS.

Our motto: "Thinking weakens the team."

squall line 11-13-2011 04:52 PM

Any news from those who were lucky enough to interview? Any changes to the process, hiring %, etc. thanks

Sunny1 11-30-2011 06:51 AM

Fish or anyone at Alaska.....do you know how many were hired when they did interviews in late Oct, and do you know if/when there will be any more interviews? Thanks.

Fishfreighter 11-30-2011 07:55 AM

Here's the latest from the VP of Ops:

To support this projected 6% growth rate, we have interviewed 32 candidates and hired 18 so far. The next round of interviews are scheduled for the middle of December where we will fill up the remaining 25 new hire slots we anticipate needing through February. We will take a brief break from hiring in the spring and then will resume the hiring process in July. From July to December of next year we anticipate hiring an additional 66 which will bring the total number of new hires to approximately 91 over the next year.
I want to make clear to you that the numbers mentioned above are a good snapshot of the growth we are planning for with the information we have as of today. Once again, and I cannot overemphasize this, these numbers could change either way as they are HIGHLY dependant on guys returning from LOAs, retirements, the economy, oil prices, competition, and other factors.
