Atlas or Omni
I introduce myself.
Which is more preferable place to work, Atlas or Omni? Thank you. Looking forward to friendship. MaroonBaboon |
No poll. Do the research.
|
Let me help you out...
Many of us left Omni for Atlas. No one leaves Atlas for Omni. That would be like leaving Delta for Mesa. |

Ok, I'll bite!!
A job at Atlas these days is highly competitive...I don't know how tough it is to get on at Omni. Here's a solution...get on at Omni, get some big airplane time (assuming you don't have any), and as soon as your OE is done at Omni, start calling friends at Atlas, and apply at Atlas Air, Inc. Good luck...and btw, don't forget to read the mega-thread about the Atlas job http://www.airlinepilotforums.com/hi...ir-hiring.html currently at 538 pages!! |

Voted. Wannabee
Hope I didn't skew vote. Omni has a good group of pilots; however, as the Dr. asked: 1 or 2? |
Seriously?? I won't even read what was written. "Regional" of ACMI or "Major" of ACMI?

Anyone who knows anything about ACMI knows Atlas is the cream of the crop!
|
You sure about that?...I call it the cream of the crap.
|
All I can say is that I'm happy here. You'd have to pry me out with a crowbar. It's pretty much just like what I loved most about flying C-141s but without the tents and MREs.
|
Ask the guys where they spent their lovely nights in Afghanistan when the jet broke!!
Hint...it was a tent, so don't be so sure that you'll never be in a tent ever again. Even at Atlas, it may happen...but not very often.:D |
I'm going to save my comments until my employment is up with Omni in 11 days. I'll just say that Omni is what it is, and I'm glad I got the opportunity to go build heavy international time. Fantastic pilot group, too. They will be missed.
But...guess where I'm leaving Omni for? |

Where are the Omni guys on the seniority list doing the 762 between LAS-HNL? That seems like the best gig in the system there.

If you are willing to work for either, assuming only 1 offers you a job then certainly apply to both and take the first offer. If you get a subsequent offer from the other then you and only you can decide based on your personal set of circumstances, where you live or want to live. Schedules verses pay potential growth, new airplane firm orders etc, etc etc. These Who should I work for Poles are usually meaningless as most who ask these questions do not have an offer from either. Sorry, I don't mean to sound brash, but Just saying....... |

Isn't K4 some mountain in the Himalayas?? ;)
I'm happy to have interviewed at both, but made it in the pool of only one; so the choice was made FOR me... |
Would you leave a Major for Atlas?
Seems to me like the flying at Atlas would be way more interesting, and I like my days off in a large block. Thoughts from current Atlas employees? |

Schedules are bid in either 30 or 60 day blocks and you can usually get large blocks of time off. Leaving the major is a personal decision that I couldn't balance for you. Although the pay is on par with the majors, look closely at retirement and benefits as both are much less at Atlas than at most major airlines. 8 |

We do have lots of guys that got furloughed from the "legacy" airlines during their many rounds of layoffs, and most of them have NOT accepted any recall offers. Obviously, by now, they have exhausted recall rights they might have had, because they feel the Atlas works better for them. And likely more important...the alternatives are worse, meaning going back to UA, US, AA, etc and commuting to sit reserve across the country, and flying a narrow-body aircraft from ORD to MSP, etc is not something they want to do anymore... That said, we did have a guy that was furloughed from UA and left Atlas to accept a job at Continental, and will get his rightful seniority back at UA when they are fully merge. Good luck. |
I don't know of anyone who quit a major to go to work at Atlas, however many have gone the other way. My guess is that there are probably 12-20 more that will eventually accept recall to AA or UA. DO NOT be blinded by the airplane (747), after a month or so flying it, it is what it is. Just another airplane, there is nothing special or magical about it. Then it is just a job and don't get me wrong, I enjoy it. If you are contemplating coming to work here, do your homework and make sure you (more importantly, your family) will enjoy the lifestyle.
|
I agree with you about the 747 (and other widebodies), however, the point I should have made more clearly was that several of the legacy furloughed pilots at Atlas did not accept a recall because they do not want to go back to that kind of flying...it is a choice they made, and they seem happy to have made it.
|
We (K4, aka Kalitta) have about 20 furloughed TWA/AA guys on our property, and another handful of UAL guys/gals. Some have already decided to go back.... after looking at the equity payout for the AA guys several have decided to go back immediately and I believe others will follow. FWI... the equity payout for a recalled guy at AA could be from low 5 figures... to as much as 150,000 for some of the guys. OH...they have to be on property by the end of 2013 to get that money...along with a few other restrictions. I dont know of any of our AA guys who have exhausted their recall rights....they have 3 years from when the most junior guy has been offered recall...and that still hasnt happened as of yet. It will be interesting to see who goes back over the next year or so that is for sure.
