First I just want to say that I wish those on furlough and about to be furloughed the best of luck. I was furloughed for 7 months, not long compared to other airlines I know, but I do know how stressful it is. According to the APC website, it says that there are currently 88 on furlough. How many more are going to get furloughed and on what date? Are there anymore planned furloughs after this one? I hope the best for the Horizon pilots and the company. I feel it is the only chance to one day get back to my home in Seattle. The east coast is a depressing place and I never feel the same as when I am home.

The CRJ700 has been used to cripple the careers of mainline pilots. At my airline, you can fly across the continent from LAX to SAT to IAD, however, chances are it won't be on a mainline aircraft. I don't believe that that was the original intent of "feeder" or "regional" partners. The industry has changed, without a doubt. Regional gigs that were previously considered stepping stones are now careers. That's great. More power to you. But please don't try to sell the notion that an increase in CRJ700 flying by a feeder/regional does not have an effect on the flying done by the mainline partner. I'm living that reality.

If a Horizon CRJ700 has never flown a city pair, or a segment length that was previously flown by AS, then I stand corrected.

Sorry for the thread drift. Here's hoping the the Horizon pilots and their furloughees get what they deserve. And I say that sincerely.

Hog

I was also sincere when I wrote "hold the line." We don't need another Freedom Airlines event.

Hog,

This is just a quick lesson on the Alaska/Horizon history and how they operate...just so you will know. I'm a furloughed QX'er, so this is something I usually have to explain to friends at other regionals.

I don't want you to think this is disrespectful, because most people just think of Horizon as "Alaska's Regional".

Horizon Air became part of the Alaska Air Group in 1986, so it is really the sister carrier to Alaska Airlines. Horizon Air has it's own marketing dept, it's own reservations dept, etc.

Alaska Air has select markets where it has a CPA with Horizon. Most of those are from Seattle and Portland to California markets. So in truth, Horizon only carries 25-30% of passengers that would have been flying on an Alaska jet for that market.

Alaska mainly does this during off-peak times when a 737-700/800 aren't required and can be used in other markets. Most of the time, Horizon operates a flight for Alaska so that they can put that aircraft into a new market.

The CRJ-700 was the replacement for the Fokker F.28-1000/4000 aircraft, which Horizon operated from 1984 (F.28-1000, till 97) till 2003 (F.28-4000, started in 96). Horizon was flying jets well before the CRJ's became the "cool" thing at regionals.

SEA - BIL is an example for you Hog. QX always lead the way, until the last few years now they are leading the way to a deadend career.

40 more to be furloughed in November. No furloughs announced beyond that... yet. As the contraction continues I'm sure there will be more.
