Same thing happened to me. I was second row all the way on the right against the wall. It appeared the joystick didn't work.

Edit: I don't think it matters. Ive made it to Phase 2.

To move the ball left/right you can't just move the joystick left/right. You have to "twist" the joystick left/right. It's hidden in the fast read instructions.
