While KLM will be hurt, U.S. carrier JetBlue faces the loss of all its summer Schiphol slots. The airline only started offering flights out of the Dutch hub in August and as a result has no “historic” right to operate there next summer.

It’s one of 24 carriers that hold no historic rights, according to Hugo Thomassen, managing director of Airport Coordination Netherlands.

JetBlue is pressing the U.S. authorities to retaliate, calling for Washington to block KLM from operating out of New York’s JFK airport.

“We believe the U.S. and Dutch Governments have an obligation under our historic Open Skies Agreement to ensure that JetBlue is granted continued access at Amsterdam’s only viable airport,” the airline said in an emailed statement.

What a crock. I’m sure this will help save the planet.

The problem with this retaliation is that the very politicians and activists in Amsterdam that push these cuts onto Schiphol in the first place would love to see all airlines curtailed from flying, so threatening KLM with service cuts will actually make them happier!

Most in the US have no idea how far the new religion of "saving the planet" has advanced in Europe. There are proposals in the EU to limit all citizens to like 3 R/T flights for the entirety of their lifetime.

Robin has talked about it before and yes, it is a serious existential threat to airlines.

Because Airbus I’m sure will sit back and watch their home countries, with the lobbying dollars they have, torpedo one of their biggest business…

plus what happens to all the European elites who have never set foot on an airline and have a fleet of biz jets? The EU going to tell them they need to be turned over to the beer can factory and have to take a boat overseas?

Don’t underestimate the ability of Europeans to do things that to us seem stupid. The vast majority of Europes wars never did make sense to our culture. The 1726 book of Gulliver’s Travels comes to mind. The part about wars being fought over which end of a soft boiled egg to crack for your morning breakfast is far closer to the truth than you’d think..

I have no problem with people having that dialogue, especially in Europe. It's much smaller geographically and has a high speed rail and public transit system that's decades ahead of ours. It's not unfair to say "you probably shouldn't be flying between Paris and Frankfurt."

There is no reason why you can't be environmentally conscious *and* reasonable, and the more people there are that can be both, the less of a voice the extremes will have.

That said, I clearly don't see how booting 2 NEO flights a day out of AMS is about anything other than limiting competition for KLM/Delta. You can reduce flying while maintaining competition, but they chose not to do that. Gee I wonder why.

No, the elites will get a pass and be able to do whatever they want.
