However, I wasn't the one asking about the rumor - I asked what the stipulations ("the deal") with the supposed 5-year contract. Anyone have any info? Is it just a training note, or is there something linked to performance over five years or what?

There is no deal. This is simply a recurring 'urban legend' about guys getting creamed at year 5.

The '5 year' is simply the LENGTH of the terms of the contract and remain unchanged and automatically renew until renegotiated. Sound familiar???

Do any Jet Blue pilots anticipate that a new contract is something desirable or are you guys pretty content with the status quo?
Also is this 5 year contract negociated on a one-on-one basis or do all pilots hitting their 5 year point recieve some type of new contract?

When you reach your 5-yr point, your current contract automatically renews. If the contract terms change, they change for everyone at once. The last time they tried to change any of the terms, there was, shall we say, unrest among the ranks. It ultimately didn't happen. The last change of any consequence was the addition of E190 rates to the pay schedule, and it was not well received. The contract (absent the new pay scale) hasn't changed substantially from the beginning of oparations.

Some QOL items (scheduling, flight and duty limits, some pay policies, etc.) aren't even written into contract terms, only incorporated by reference. If there is much dissatisfaction, it will be found there. For good or ill, those terms can be easily changed. So far there has been willingness to take pilot input and change them for the better, but that's not the same as having contract language. As things stand now, with this management team, I haven't had any problem with this approach, but I suspect some on this board disagree.

As Bluedude notes, when first class hit five year mark last year, a new contract for everyone was presented. There was much discontent, so management rescinded the new contract and just added an addendum to the old one, including the pay scale for the 190.

I, for one, am fairly content for now, but I expect to get a raise when our margins get back up (whenever that happens...$25 intro fares on new routes and 59$ transcon fares for "buddies" will not help our yields!). If that does not happen, and if stock price does not go up, and profit sharing dries up...stand by.

Ian, you would jump at a chance to work for B6, even at $37/hour. There are plenty of qualified guys/gals who would love to leave Mesa, Sky West and the likes for anything with more potential.
