BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- A large cargo plane crashed at the end of a runway and split in two while trying to take off Sunday at Brussels airport, authorities said.

Four of the five crew members on board the Boeing 747 were slightly injured, said Francis Vermeiren, mayor of the nearby town of Zaventem. The mayor was coordinating rescue efforts after the crash.

"The plane is not on fire but it has split into two," he told VRT radio.

Firefighters were coating the wings of the plane with special fire retardant foam as a precaution because the plane was still full of jet fuel, the mayor said.

He said the plane was on a scheduled flight to Bahrain. It was not known what cargo the plane was carrying.

The plane came to a halt at the end of a runway, near houses and a cemetery.

Vermeiren said the pilot told rescue authorities he heard a large noise while trying to take off just after midday. It was not yet clear what caused the crash.

The plane is owned by Kalitta Air, a cargo carrier based in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Very glad to hear the crew is ok! Wow, has anyone heard why the plane split up like that?

8-capt 05-25-2008 08:35 AM

Looks like that ride down the slide would be wild. Then again is beats a rope anyday.

heavyjetpilot 05-25-2008 09:12 AM

Nothing a bit of speed tape won't fix...:D Glad all is well.

Cheers,
Craig

Because it hit the ground....it split on impact. Looks like it pancaked in like Fine Air (sp?) in MIA. Loud bang + pancake=cargo shift.

Just a guess here but having flown the said airplane personaly. I think that driving a 700,000 pound machine threw the dirt at over one hundred miles an hour would do the trick! I know the crew on this one. Outstanding aviators. Only a true freight dog knows how to crash an airplane without catching on fire. A little tape and paint and they will fly her back to Oscoda. LOL!

My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

Looks the spot price for bulk aluminum is going to dip on Tuesday.

UnlimitedAkro 05-25-2008 11:55 AM

Use Clear tape, and it will be our little secret!!

If that was a Pinnacle aircraft they would send a roll of speed tape and a reserve crew to ferry it back...

dudewannabe 05-25-2008 12:21 PM

I bet they can ferry that badboy back to Oscoda by Wednesday.

I remember when the one that lost (literally) the engine diverted into DTW. We were taxiing out and saw her come in...both of us kept on looking at the plane going "something...something doesn't look quite right. OHH THAT!!!"

jsfBoat 05-25-2008 02:24 PM

For all the guys that like to use cockpits for flight simulators, looks like another one will be available soon!

Precontact 05-25-2008 04:19 PM

There's a message somewhere in that photo, just don't know what it is.

Front Office 05-25-2008 04:34 PM

Thats simple...

Trains, planes and automobiles....

We are going to need a few extra rolls of speedtape.

Do you know if the FO's initials were RL by any chance? We used to fly Jetsreams way back, hope he's ok. I know my other buddy there (GS) has switched to the -400 already... Either way, pretty serious ordeal, it’s amazing and great that everyone made it all right…

By the way, I believe the leftist politicians in that city (leftist and Europe in the same sentence - is that an oxymoron? ;)) have tried to close that airport for quite some time, this might help them...

A320 Pilot 05-25-2008 07:22 PM

well thats what happens when you fly old dinosaurs:(those aircrafts belong in the museum and should not be flying.Maybe Kalitta needs to invest some money in A380s:)
atleast the crew came out alright from this scary ordeal, wish em all the best.

I guess they didn't teach you the difference between YOU'RE and YOUR in 747 captain school?

:D:D

That would be grammatically........not linguistically..........knew you would want to know........;)

This is laughable. If you are going to flame someone, make sure you are right first.

OOTSK 05-26-2008 05:38 AM

I believe that was the bird with the "R" engines. That's too bad, it was a great flying airplane.

I wish the crew a speedy recovery and hope everything turns out well for them!

Plz.try to contribute something sensible to this forum oops I forgot your Mama didnt teach you not to watch porn on the internet and thats why you think that other people have hands in their pants:pare you from San Fernando valley by any chance:D??????

Bottom line is that Kalitta and other carriers that are operating such antiques will be faced with these or maybe even worst kind of disasters and they just need to overhaul their fleets.

Huck 05-26-2008 11:00 AM

I'm sure they'll get right on that.

(Don't tell him how old our three-holers are....)

It is all in good fun, not meant to be a personal attack.

Relax and enjoy the sunshine, brother!

Sure...and we'll all get hired by FedEx too. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it...but Kalitta's got some of the best maintained classics in the business and I don't see how you can connect an overrun to an old plane? Seems like it happens to brand new RJ's all the time.

I'd just be happy with FMS in all our aircraft. Trying to find lat/longs in Europe is a be-otch.

Rama 05-26-2008 12:28 PM

I feel for you Spongebob. Operating a 60+ waypoint plan through Europe on Carousels really sucked especially when getting a re-route.
