Now, I'm not yet working for an airline, but I start class in less than a month. One of the opportunities I am looking forward to once I start flying, though, is overnights in random places.

I was curious if there is anybody else around who participates in geocaching. It's where people go and hide containers in spots, then post the coordinates online. You then plug those coordinates into your handheld GPS and try to find it, sign the logbook, maybe trade one useless item for another useless item if the container is big enough. Geocaching has been a hobby for me for nearly four years now, and I love going to new places and trying to find caches.

It seems to me that overnights will be an opportune chance to go out and find some new areas with this hobby for an hour or two, and I guess I was just wondering if there was anybody else that does this?

 

I've heard of this but never partaken in the hobby. I think you've got a great idea though. I know guys hide things in the hub of control yolk on certain planes. Such items can be notes and candy. LOL

 

I geocache, but you'll find that unless you have access to a car (such as with a corporate department), geocaching can be difficult when you're overnighting. (unless your right nearby a place with a cache).

 

Can be, but usually aren't.

 

What are they usually? I probably dont want to know but curiosity has got me now.

 

Can't say that I ever saw candy or notes... Eye candy on the other hand...

 

My pops use to leave/receive candy and notes when he flew 707's for Aeroamerica. The 707 has a nice place on the wheel to hide all sorts of goodies. Sometimes a small picture of the playboy playmate of the year.


I've seen a video of a guy who wrote "Guck FoJets" on the back of the hub on the ERJ. Hilarious.

 

Yeah, I guess I never thought of that. The wife and I have done quite a bit of traveling in the past couple years, and it was always fun to go and try to pick up a few wherever we were at...but we always had a vehicle too.

 

my parents found some money in one of them...it's nice cuz you can take things out and put things in as you go...another time they found a brand new case full of make-up...I went once, but we checked everywhere within the coordinates and we just finally gave up after about an hour in that area...after that I wasn't too zealous to get out there again...everyone I know that goes loves it though..it's sort of like gambling: if you don't win the first time, you don't really care to go back too much...

 

Here's a way to get easy access to a car. Only if you're in a large city or near a college campus.

I've been known to walk five miles round trip to find a cache. It gets you out of the hotel and little exercise. It's a win-win.
