Sky...i didnt realize I was past having to raise small children.... my youngest girl is 8. And my oldest goes to the University of Miami... albeit I only contribute about 10k a year to her education...the rest is scholarship.

Everyone's situation is different... everyone's expections are different.....I respect your opinion of the industry... all most of us ask is the same in return.

Tony.... yea I did my time at AE ( Flagship division ...when regionals were really regionals ) when they were still part of APA....talk about red head step children... I wore the SAME APA pin and paid dues to the same union as mainline but man when the rubber met the road those guys were nowhere to be found.

p.s. sitting in the FBO in AUS waiting for clients to get back from a meeting

"I've always been an optimist, but this time... I believe the country is on the verge of collapse."

If you're right, Airbus, then the world as we know it is about to end and I doubt you'll find many enduringly positive careers. Maybe bomb shelter construction?

Personally, I'm not that pessimistic about the state of the state. How depressing...

Good for you UPS and you have reason to be in a confortable state. Glad your timing was just right. Maybe I feel this way because I'm in my early 30's...like most of the almost 4000 pilots furloughed at AirTran, Spirit, United, Continental, Northwest, US Airways, Comair, Aloha, ExpressJet, Midwest, Republic, USA3000, Air Wisconsin, Trans States, and soon to be Alaska and Horizon. Did I forget anyone? Most have really little to look forward to at this point, considering what all have been through during post-9/11.
Thanks for the job suggestion, but no... actually employment at one of the IC agencies. Wish me luck and fly safe.

this isn't the only site that has folks talking about leaving the career. There is a huge thread going on right now on another site I belong to about getting out.

Most of that was spent far below the poverty line.

As such I was unable to build the financial momentum that most others in fruitful professions enjoy. I know how badly pilots are hurt by accepting low wages. I am here to pass on that money is very important and that none of us can afford to waste our youth on a dead end.

So yes money is very important to me. It is hypocritical of you to suggest otherwise. As you have stated your spouse is the main breadwinner in your household. If she did not have such a good job or if you had to stay at home with small kids then we would not be having this conversation. You left flying to make a real living before. I can not understand how you could think otherwise.

I am not so naive to think that I can selfishly satisfy desires that are not going to bare a profit. My family needs me to make the responsible choice and to provide for them. Aviation is a hobby job. Maybe someday once my kids are grown and my retirement is secure I too can return.

There's a line in the movie The Aviator where Howard Hughes is having dinner with Kate Hepburn's family. The matriarch says "we don't care about money here" to which Dicaprio responds "that's because you have it".

Sky... I left the aviation at one point because I was disgusted with APA and their utter contempt for Eagle pilots who paid dues to APA. The commute was a real pain in the ass as well.... but did I leave with the intention of making good over that decade or so... not really. Hell the first year I spent more time looking for another flying job...any flying job.... but that was 1994 and they were scarce at the time.

The bottom line is we all my choices in our lives. YOU made the choice to leave and stay out.... and its been a good choice for YOU. Nobody denies that. Just remember your thoughts about the industry are YOURS... your opinions... and while there are certainly things in there that ring true, much of it is YOUR opinion. There are alot of FO's at Legacy's out there knocking down close to 100k a year. We all know thats chump change to you the realestate tycoon but many would argue that that is a fair living and are prepared do so in this profession.

Sucess in life is not measured by how much you money you make. Now that is MY opinion. Frankly my wife and I were just as happy when we were 23 and broke as we are now. And I wouldnt call us wealthy by any stretch of the imagination now. I know plenty of people who live very modestly on very modest incomes who have very full and happy lives. To each their own.

EVERY profession has those who feel the burden is too great.... doctors... lawyers...pilots.... you name it. Find something in life you really enjoy and make it work for you, in short thats what drove me back to aviation... I could be making alot more money in private business .... but even my wife will tell you point blank that I am a much better person flying for my profession than not.

Good Luck to all.
