Default Bus Drivers Double Salaries

Most bus driving jobs (at least in Seattle) start as part time and the pay is low. I am suggesting that if you are furloughed or close to be, you ought to consider taking a job, any job. And this article is also meant to illustrate that as in any profession or occupation, most everyone starts at the bottom at some time. These are hard and uncertain economic times. We should take care of each other and take care of ourselves, but also use this time to prepare for the upswing.

SEATTLE – A KING 5 Investigation has prompted the King County Council to look at how Metro Transit is spending its money.

Metro is in a budget crisis with fuel prices and ridership at record highs. A rate hike is almost certain.

When the KING 5 Investigators started looking into what Metro pays out and to whom, there were some surprising results.

One of King County's highest paid employees rides the bus every day and he's always assured a great spot: the driver's seat.

Dan Linville is a Metro bus driver with 37 years of service, a great safety record and a paycheck that's more than double his salary.

How does he do it? Overtime.

"I earn every dollar I make," he said. "I earn it minute for minute, in the seat."

According to what vagabond just posted, "I am suggesting that if you are furloughed or close to be, you ought to consider taking a job, any job.....

People let me tell you, in addition to bus drivers, there are airport operators that would love to have either a retired or furloughed pilot as a team player/member on their Operations Staff.

Those persons with just a PPL have a distinct advantage over those who don't. This translates into time & money saved training you to commuicate effectively w/ the tower and able to operate an operations vehicle on the AOA and in other aircraft movement areas.

In airport ops, you are assigned to airside duties, which include but not limited to airfield, runway, perimeter, taxiway & lighting inspections. You guys are already familiar with FAR Part 108 or at least have a working knowledge of it. If you do, study Parts 77, 139, 1520 & 1542 also. It should come easy.

In addition, you also will be expected to handle Landside and Terminal duties when assigned to you. All is OJT.

All the best to all who are facing these circumstances.
