Machinist as a backup?
So I've been thinking about what I should do for a backup and I'm really interest in becoming a machinist. I have a small wood shop, with a lathe and other tools, but I'd like to get into working with metal. Seems machinists make decent money, and I wouldn't have to go back to college for a second degree, don't want to take out any more student loans. Any machinists on here and any ideas of how to get into this?

I know our local vo-tech has a machining program. I went for two years just to learn. Could have gotten a job thru it, but was just interested from a hobby perspective. I know machinists and there are several facets to various jobs. Some jobs require high precision (like stufff for lenses, etc), some involve setting up cnc or other automated machines and some are just prototype style stuff. Of course there are lots of other things in between too. Guess it depends cause I know it's hard to stay accurate with it if you're not doing it on a regular basis buy the pay with some places can be descent.
