King of Netherlands secretly a KLM FO.

He's been an FO for 21 years on the Fokker, now transitioning to the 737.

Interesting but not a surprise. In Great Britain Prince Charles and his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry all have been helicopter pilots in the military.

DC8DRIVER 05-18-2017 11:49 AM

It is really amazing that he has been able to keep this under wraps for this long. It speaks to a great deal of humility and a passion for aviation that he didn't go public with this for his ego or some sort of political gain.

qball 05-18-2017 11:58 AM

It aint a secret any more 😳

303flyboy 05-18-2017 12:41 PM

Haha so cool. Wish I could cherry pick my two locals every month and call it good ! :)

MoeLarryCheese 05-18-2017 12:48 PM

I wonder if he bought the beer on the overnight or insisted everyone go Dutch.

It's the norm for young royalty to do military service, kind of expected.

A bit unusual to fly for an airline, but cool non-the-less.

We tend to get wrapped around the negatives of the airline biz sometimes, but when you see rock n roll gods and kings doing our job when they don't have to it reminds you that a lot of people wanted to do this, but not many could (especially in the older generations).

Referring to B.D. no doubt.

And it wasn't a secret.
Actually pretty well known in The Netherlands. Just nobody really made a big deal about it as it's been his hobby. Europeans tend to respect privacy a little more.
Then prince now king also participated in skating events under a pseudonym that everybody kinda knew anyway.

Doesn't the King of Jordan fly occasionally for Royal Jordanian?
I think his dad did.
Present King Abdullah flew against ISIS

http://controversialtimes.com/wp-con...2/Abdullah.jpg

I'll rate that a little higher on the BA-scale then the occasional passenger flight that 'nobody knows about'.

opdeliber 05-18-2017 06:14 PM

King Abdullah also runs a country that allows murderers to slaughter American soliders and then blame the soldiers for their own deaths. 3 Green Berets will never receive the justice they deserve under that coward.

Let's just keep this on a guy who wanted to fly airplanes, and was able to, instead of being distracted by who his parents were.

That's cool. Some people want to do this job in spite of what it's become for some of us. Good for him.
At the end of the day, I don't do this job for money or status.

Military finds 3 US soldiers killed in Jordan acted properly - CNNPolitics.com

Lighten up. Stuff happens, the government did not order the guard to do that, the guard was not even a terrorist. It was a colossal screwup. Tensions in the region are so high that this sort of thing is unfortunately inevitable.

The guy is King, and could only hold Fokker F/O for 21 years?

I'd be interested to see the information you have on his civilian flying. My wife is an airline pilot who was born and raised in the Netherlands and has never heard of Willem-Alexander flying anything other than military aircraft.

Let's talk more about your Dutch wife. The two times I've been there I've seen nothing but tens.

You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship, a self-perpetuating autocracy...

bubi352 05-21-2017 01:29 PM

A good friend of mine from the Netherlands was telling me he would hang out with the Air Force pilots, flips his mom (Queen) picture hang up on the wall up-side down and tell her 'Not today mom!' and get sh** faced with the crews.

Ha, I didn't know anybody else would still remember that joke!

(On my last trip, I got to explain to my FO what a coffee peculator was... He said he & his wife only knew the French press.)
