In many air carrier accidents of all types, a common thread is the pilot not understanding what part of aircraft control (what axis or power setting) is being controlled by the pilot and what is being controlled by some part of the aircraft.

So that I can learn something, would you care to cite some air carrier accidents where the pilot and his/her crew didn't know what axis or power setting is being controlled by the pilot and what was powered by the plane. Thanks in advance.

Airplanes can be automated and have features to help you out without going to where they over ride you... for example the MD-11 low speed protection will move the autothrottles (or engage and move them if they're off) when you get to with in 5Kts of Vmin.. but if you were so inclined for what ever reason you can a)over ride the AutoThrottles, or b)disconnect them with the hard disconnects for the AutoFlight and this will keep them from waking at the 5 kts.. this is stall protection without taking over the airplane.

If you got into a low speed situation like this in the bus, you can override the Alpha Floor protection as well if you wish for whatever reason, just press the autothrust disconnects and you are out of TOGA lock and free to move the thrust levers about the country. If you are smooth, you can fly around at idle power just above the stall in Alpha protection. Many companies have you demo this in training at altitude-just don't do it 50' above a runway at an airshow as you obviously won't clear trees or anything else in this scenario without some power. But the plus is you won't be stalled when you hit the ground, I've always thought that was the perfect definition of controlled(pilot) flight into terrain.

Now back to the standard folklore and inane stories of auto go-arounds due to bad fuel guages.
