New Open Skies deal
 
Canada and US reached a deal on open skies today. Now airlines can pickup passengers in either country and fly to a third country. AirCanada is by far the biggest benificiary of this deal. They just got a whole new international market opened up for them.... flights to anywhere in the world from Chicago, Newyork, LA, San Fran, and the list goes on. US carriers dont get a whole lot out of this deal. Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary...

What do you think this will do for American carriers?

Air Canada as been planning a LA-Sydney route for a long time now using their new 777's. Feed passengers from across canada into LA then fly the 777 between LA and sydney. Seems weird that AC would pick this route considering it goes up against their close ally United.
Also talk about more caribian, central/south america flying via florida

All is fair in love and war. I think we are going to see a lot of "friendships" crumble ... Air Canada get the Windfall. American pilots get the shaft. Thanks, W.

IIRC Air Canada wanted to go into LAX to replace the stop they had to make in HNL because customs there was too much of a pain in the arse, the 767 had to make the stop either way. Now that they're getting 777's they are going to fly direct without the stop in HNL, the LAX idea is scrapped. Finally they're getting rid of those gas guzzeling A340's:D .

They did not scrap the LA idea.... they posponed it several months ago waiting for the results of the open skies. The idea was to feed trafic into LA with smaller aircraft then use the 777 between LA and Sydney. Which makes more sense then Vancouver. They may return to this plan soon enough.
The 340's were a good plane, they purposly made it 4 engines so it would not have to follow certain regulations.... just bad luck damn OPEC keeps driving the price of oil up
