Default Non-Rev Listing Courtesy

What's the gerneral decorum for non-rev listing yourself for a flight as far as time frame prior to departure. It seems like the standby list could be a pretty helpful gauge on whether or not you should waste time for a specific flight. But if 25 people list last minute, then the standby list is pointless. Any care to opine on the courtesies in this area or is it basically a free for all?

For United passriders, anyone who lists within 1 hour prior to departure is supposed to be placed at the bottom of the standby list, regardless of status.

AA is based on time of check-in starting 24 hours prior. Last minute listing would not be a good strategy.

That is not correct.

You can not change your pass type within one hour (domestic flight). i.e. from a standard pass to a vacation pass.
