Default POLL - "best" retirement - which major?

Possibly subjective to some degree, as what matters to one may be different than the other guy, but what non-regional major 121 ("major", not just "legacy/Big-3") has the best retirement system, and why?

I say "non regional" to mean, not RJ or turboprop operators etc.

Only Airbus/Boeing/McDonnell Douglas etc equipment.

Poll limit is only ten choices, I did not include Allegiant or Hawaiian Airlines

FedEx is the only one you needed in the poll.

but the individual answer is the one that calls.

UPS & FDX are essentially on par in term of retirement benefit.

FDX has a better defined benefit (max benefit at 25YOS vs. 30YOS at UPS), while UPS has a better defined contribution (12% vs. 9%).

Yeah. FDX and UPS are probably the best.

AA, UA, DL, and Jetblue all have a 16% DC into a 401K

Alaska, Hawaiian, and Southwest are 15%

NK and F9 are 14% now upping to 15% next March.

so not that much variation outside the big 2 cargo carriers

Fedex if you live long enough to enjoy it.

another supporter for the myth of dead cargo pilots? Weird how there’s never any data to back this up

Fedex defined benefit plan

2% of FAE up to 25 years of service with a 5 year vesting period. FAE = the average of the highest

five calendar years of compensation, up to $260,000 per year. Maximum pension is $130,000 per year.

FedEx defined contribution plan

9% of earnings plus 50% match up to the first $1,000.

You can select your spouse as as a survivor with corresponding reduction of pension if you think you’ll die the day after retirement (for those with that theory).

Maybe my thinking is incorrect but for someone starting out I personally don’t think fedex has the best. I know it’s a pension but it hasn’t been raised in benefit since 1998 I believe and in all likelihood won’t ever be raised again. In 25 or more years that benefit is significantly reduced due to the value of the dollar. I know they bargained for a DC as well so that could change things but I never crunched those numbers.

Maybe I’m wrong in that thought?

The challenge is in maximizing tax advantaged retirement dollars. A B plan is capped at $57k/yr right now. If you want more tax advantaged dollars towards your retirement, paid by your employer, a pension is the only option. Whether you are talking UPS’ pension plan or Fred’s they are each the equivalent of several million dollars socked away if you use the standard 3 or 4% withdrawal rates. Per ALPA, a Delta pilot would have to invest every profit sharing dollar and all cash over cap money (pre-tax somehow) to equal the retirement at UPS at 30 yrs. Due to the time value of money, the shorter your “career destination” career, the more important a pension becomes.
