Default question

This might be a stupid question but i was wondering, what is the difference between a flight engineer and a second officer, or are they one in the same

It was originally called f/e and the seat was generally filled with a person who had a mechanical (A&P) background. Some supplemental freight operators still fill the position with A&P's. A second officer is the same position/seat with a pilot sitting there who will eventually work into the front seats.
An fe ticket may be obtained using either the mechanical background or having a commercial license as a prerequisite.

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

They're the same.

Here's a stupid question. Why not title your thread:

"Difference between flight engineer / second officer?"

Instead of:
"question"
