Nothing brand new here but it's a good consolidation of many articles discussing various way to deal with the pilot shortage.

That's hilarious listening to Orenstein, Bedford and Kirby whine about the pilot shortage considering they were the main contributers on why nobody wanted to be a pilot for the last decade.

It’s funny they say that 13% of the pilots will retire in the next five years like it’s newsworthy. If you assume a 40 year career and even production rates, we are always retiring roughly 12.5% every 5 years.

Bingo. So damn true. Reap what you sow and all that.

Severe, not as bad as extreme.

They’re saying reduce the 1500 hours and raise the age to 67. I’m leaning towards the former happening.

Same, but what’s ironic is there’s more ways than ever to get those 1500 hours, instructor, cargo, 91 and 135 all have openings for low time pilots

How about neither. No to 67. No to lowering requirements.

If they want people to shell out the $$$,$$$ and years of time to become airline pilots, make it financially rewarding enough to do it. Pay them and they will come. It's been discussed in length in other threads how little we're making compared to the past. Giving in to bad options, like 67 or <1500 continues the trend.

Me too. 67 is probably not happening for a few years though. Unless maybe the airlines melt down this summer and blame it on lack of pilots. Summer meltdown + winter holiday meltdown will probably make it inevitable.

NONE of us should support either. Force them to increase pay and QOL with our leverage. It’s not a pilot shortage it’s a pay shortage for the millionth time.
