If it was a self-supporting program as intended it wouldn’t need fixing and there would be no fear-mongering. But politicians on both sides dip into it creating the legitimate fear that it will be insolvent. Then they claim to come together to “fix” what they ruined, placating their constituents.

In the end the argument over who broke it and who flexes it just becomes fodder for the people of both sides to argue about, distracting us from the true problem of SS insolvency.

The decision to structure it as a giant Ponzi scheme, instead of individual owned investment accounts, destined it to be forever in danger of insolvency. Also dooming recipients to pauper payouts instead of a decent retirement benefit.

The existence of 55+ communities is also age discrimination.

Age limits (high and low) are a fact of life due to the realities of how human lives progress.

55+ communities is one aspect of that, and the fact that pilots (and a few other professions) need to have a set retirement age is another.

Precisely what the pilot retirement age should be is debatable... reasonably between 55 and 75 and ultimately politics will decide where within that range.

Good thing posts are anonymous, otherwise some of the people here would look like total dumba**** with some of the responses. In the range of “I am entitled to it” to “you get nothing”. The financial, political and budgetary realities will determine what we get. That simple. With our present situation, with our politicians overspending big time, and without any changes, we will be lucky to see 75 cents on the dollar. Raising the age or uncapping SS wages subject to taxation will only buy us X amount of years. The reality is the vast majority of under 40 years old paying 6.25% FICA (7.65 with Medicare) will never see their fully entitled amount.
