through what mechanism would you withhold congressional salaries?

A law withholding congressional salaries during a shutdown. Many bills have been offered in Congress to do this over the last thirty years - including this one.

Congressional leadership has never let one get to the floor.

It's happened in the past. I don't expect 100% of TSA to work for free for much longer than maybe a week.

I will buy them a coffee though, I feel bad.

They won't accept it. I tried giving them Starbucks cards at Christmas and was told they couldn't accept.

They don’t need gift cards… yikes!

So they'll still have some income.

Yep. I remember when there was a shutdown when I was an HT3, taking home maybe $800 twice a month with BAH. Yeah. There's no making people understand those who came from nothing, had nothing and then had to magically pay rent with zero income. Hard to have much savings when rent, utilities and food take 3/4 of your take home.

Hell, even my fist couple years as an Officer was tight. My take home with BAH and flight pay as an O-1E was like $1400 twice a month and student loans ate $1250 of that and rent + utilities (no cable, just power/water and a phone) for a crappy studio apartment in Corpus Christi was another $700 before I ate, bought gas or paid car insurance on my then 15 year old POS pickup truck.

Of couse the USNA grads looked at me because I balked at $400 wardroom assessment for some crazy party they wanted to throw.

Yeah that O-1A pay was something amazing.

Not defending those actions, but there’s been quite a few drug smuggling Airline employees in the last few years also.

if we acknowledge that, we don’t get to look down upon—as Rick put it in vaguely but implausibly deniable racist terms—“gangsterz” at TSA.

as I said, implausibly deniable. It’s a cute trick known as “dog whistling”
