Affordability Thread Drift

I think your anecdotes are dismissive. The bottom line is wages have not kept up with housing prices.
I think as legacy airline pilots we have a tendency to silo ourselves. We have a niche, unicorn job where we are 10-1% income earners clocking in and clocking out 0-15 days a month with excellent benefits and retirement. No phone calls, no boss breathing down your neck, no team to manage. This kind of deal does not exist elsewhere in the private sector.

Who knows how old you are. Hopefully old enough to know that housing is affordable if you’re willing to move to a place that is affordable. Like I did in my 20’s hence the reason I’ve only rented for 1 yr of my life.… A couple renters I have, that are 23, complain they can’t afford a house after paying me several thousand a month. I know they can afford a home if they tried not living in one of the most desirable locations in the US. I know places, near big cities, where you can get townhomes for less than $200k with low HOA’s. $1k/month for 2 bedroom townhomes. That seems pretty affordable to me.
This is an affordability thread… Maybe you didn’t see that in the title.

You can travel the world while you’re young versus a senior citizen with your passport hanging around your neck on a group tour.

I work for a ULCC and make 330K which is more than a lot of doctors. I fly around look out the window watch company related videos on my iPad and go home on my days off like you said and I am not bothered on my days off. I think our days are numbered though I’d say in the next 10 years there will be robot first officers in other countries maybe not in the US quite yet. This job is just too easy with the automation involved..

12% more useless junk silly twits are charging to credit card balances. Meanwhile climate change is polishing off Santa’s reindeer stock. Ever wonder why the grinch is so happy

Edit: Also, your black Friday stat is misleading. These days "black Friday" sales start as early as late September. Foot traffic the day of has stayed pretty flat. The only thing that has gone up consistently is % of shoppers opting to buy online which is bad for retail and local businesses.

"Why don't people buy a cheap home in Missouri and just drive to their high paying job in New York? Are they stupid?"

Drive to NYC? Wonder if all those NYC commuters ever did a cost analysis of what they spend vs. make and if they could be financially better off in a cheaper place with the same job. Along with that, the two hr commutes each way to have that oh so desirable job in NYC!
News Flash, NYC, SFO, LA have always been considered outrageously expensive. Do some research: This “affordability thread drift” has been talked about for more than 40 yrs. Same headline, different generation. That goes for every “end of Democracy, immigration, trade agreement or national debt” narrative. Same story administration after administration.
Affordability is a byproduct of where one choses to live… why is gas in CA so expensive? Is it “ oh no everything is more expensive?” Or the fact that CA is run by idiots and the cost of gas is higher because of it.? Portland created zoning restrictions some 3 decades ago. Created a pretty bad “housing crisis” when everyone wanted to live there years later.

Black Friday headline came from something like CBS News. Guess they really wanted to highlight how great Friday was? Kinda thought they were in the doom and gloom market these days?
