Default Am I too early?

I will be separating from the service in Feb 2008 and will be available to work at that time. Last week I applied to several airlines (SWA, Delta, Continental, UPS, Frontier, Spirit and Jet Blue). Does anyone know how far out any of the above airlines start looking at applicants? In other words, can I expect any e-mail or phone calls in the next couple of months or do most companies wait until the applicant is closer to their availability date? Thanks in advance for the help.

Default Never too early!

Too early? Not possible. I applied everywhere about a year before my end of active service. By the time I went on terminal leave, I was in the hiring pool with one of my bottom choices. It has not been an easy road and, three years later, I'm still not sure I've seen the end of it. Just remember the commitment and dedication you made to get your military flying slot. It's about to start all over again.

my retirement date is 1 Feb also. I started applying in jan. I got an email for SWA in april and an interview in june. DB was last week. If all goes well i can go get a type in Sep and maybe get a class by Feb/Mar. 1 year out is a min. Ducks should be lined up two or three years out. What about terminal? is that Feb or can you back it up to Dec?

If you got hired by swa on the next decision board you'd be lucky to start by Feb 08.

Delta and Continental have much shorter pipelines right now.

UPS's pool isn't "linear" as I understand it. In other words, you could get hired and have somebody who interviewed later than you jump over you in the pool because they scored higher in the selection process (that's second hand info, you should probably ask a UPS guy if that's true).

I started the whole process in Nov 06 for an Aug 07 seperation. Lots and lots and lots of apps and montly updates. Finally, got 2 interviews in July. Never to early, but you also have to keep the full court press up all the way through, constantly update and keep track of the "gouge", "gossip", "rumors' etc....

Good Luck

So, is 1-year-out (before sep or retirement) a generally accepted time to start sending in apps?

Shadow,
You're actually a little behind if you're getting out in 6 months. Nothing you can do about that now except get in touch with all your buddies at these carriers and try to get your interviews lined up. FWIW, I was even further behind than you and everything fell into place nicely, including going to indoc while on active duty, and still flying for a few weeks afterwards prior to going on terminal. Worse case senario is you stay with your unit until the end and sell back all the leave you have accrued. Good luck and I'm sure everything will work out fine.

I think the question is how far out ahead will the different airlines interview you? If you are available in 6 months they can interview you, but will a company like Delta only interview people availiable in say, 2 months?

Every airline is different. I have one friend who interviewed w/SWA, got hired, and even got called for a class before he ever put his retirement paperwork in. His availability was whenever he wanted.

Another friend got w/in one month of retirement before getting the interview call from UPS. He interviewed, and was called for a training class about 2 1/2 weeks after his interview. All w/in a span of about 2 months.

Both very extreme examples. Personally, I started 10 months out, and am wishing I had added a couple of extra months to my planning. I'm still about 4-5 classes down in the SWA pool.
