CAL hiring/aircraft/bases

CAL is waiting for their system bid to close out on Jan 25th. After that, they'll know more about their needs.
From what I've heard, the plan is for a minimum of 16 new hires per month and a maximum of 12 per week for March. Beyond that, they won't really know until the end of this month at the earliest.

This is from one of the Chief pilots:
Question: Are we still planning to hire:
Answer: Yes, however at a reduced amount. Our current growth plan still requires more pilots then the pilots who would have retired. In other words we are still growing, not just replacing retiring pilots. Keep in mind in this business with oil over $100 and the economy suffering there could always be changes in our level of operations, but for now, here is our TENTATIVE hiring plan for 2008
Jan: 40 per month
Feb- Apr 16 per month
May - Oct: 4 - 8 per month
Nov: 32 per month
Dec 40 per month

Newhire base is EWR 737 with a few EWR 756. Will hold a line in a month or so in EWR. IAH is avail in 2-4 months with reserve lasting a bit longer.....currently....depending on the next system bid and old guys leaving.

Anyone know what that new bid memo translates into that came out today? Does it mean I am no longer aircraft locked for 2 years and if I so desired, could bid down to the 737? It does seem similar to a flush bid. Help.

I may be wrong but if you've already trained, I think you're stuck.

New York - Continental Airlines, the fourth largest US carrier, said Thursday it had pre-tax profits in the fourth quarter of 2007, despite soaring fuel prices that hurt the industry. The Houston-based firm said profits were 71 million dollars before taxes after losses of 26 million dollars in the year-earlier period. Revenues rose 12 per cent to 3.5 billion dollars.
Continental was able to shield itself from the effects of higher oil prices by increasing fares and flying more passengers. (What a concept)
By mid-February, the airline will know the impact of taxes that could be up to 140 million dollars.
Profits for the year rose more than 50 per cent to 566 million dollars, while revenue rose 8 per cent to 14.2 billion dollars.
Most airlines expect losses for the quarter due to sharp competition and higher fuel costs. AMR Corporation, parent company of the largest US carrier American Airlines, said Wednesday it had lost 69 million dollars for the quarter.
