AA Hiring any time soon?
Maybe some of the American guys can help me out? I heard as much as 2000 and as little as 1300 left on the furlough list what is the actual number? also I was wondering if you might know what American's hiring plans might be, its the only place I really want to work for as my father worked there for 31 years. Any info would be appreciated.

By the Numbers
Here are the current numbers published at the APA web site:
Total Furloughed: 2811 Offered recall as of 2/16): 1413 Total Recalled: 727 Total Deferring: 671 Remaining to be called for recall: 1413 Total remaining furloughs: 2084 Confused? That's because a AA furloughees recall rights come with a 3 year deferral option. So it's quite possible that AA could reach the end of the recall list, and then have to begin hiring (sometime in 2009?). Keep in mind that returning furloughees will continue to come back in front of any new hires. Good Luck |
Just to add, the 3 year deferral clock does not start until the most junior furloughee is notified of recall.

I am aware of the 3 year clock ticking once they get to the last guy, I was mainly trying to get an idea as to where the real number is at. thank you

I would think that most of those deferrals are just keeping their options available, but have found gainful employment elsewhere in the industry. I realize that a new contract with a 30% increase may make them change their minds :D, but any guess on % of deferrals which would come back within the three years? Just asking for a educated guess here, I realize how things in this industry can change dramatically. Onfinal |
sdpilot,
saw your post up there about your times and getting hired by a major. In your favor, AA has not had a turbine PIC requirement for a long time. In fact, I got hired here straight out of the right seat of a regional, 0 turbine PIC. Didn't even have an ATP (just got it last week when I finished 757/767 int'l training... after eight years!) So you definitely have a chance. Regarding AA hiring, what OFD said is pretty darn accurate. I used to think early 2009 but now with age 65 it may be mid to late 2009, or even 2010. However, a LOT of our guys are bailing early... we lost 143 on Feb 1 alone, and rumored to be losing 50 on Mar 1. So things are going in the right direction. Hope to see ya on the property soon! 73 |
Hope so
AA73,
If they called me I would be on the property so fast that all you would see is a dust trail behind me. My dad worked there for 31 years, so its my first choice. Hoping that early 2009 is what it turns out to be. Fly safe!:D |
thanks man. as a side note, my hours weren't even in your ballpark... 2800TT, 1500 turbine, and a sh&^load of SIC J-41 time. so you are in good shape, especially since your dad worked there.

I know a lot of furloughees at FDX, UPS, MLOA, etc. Some I thought would never come back, but after talking with some, they seem to be "up in the air" (no pun intended). The last furlough in 1992-1997 we had about 50% return. It's running about the same today. What is confusing the situation is: what are the deferrals going to do? It's a very subjective and personal issue, but if I had to guess it will be close to the 50-50 number. JMHO |
My guess is no hiring for at least 18 months. If AA goes into another merger, look for re-furloughing.
