Default SWA Jet Lands With Wheel Ablaze

Well, here's a little excitement. Glad everything and everyone is ok.

From Associated Press:
PHOENIX - A Southwest Airlines flight landed at Sky Harbor International Airport on Monday with flames coming from a wheel in its right rear landing gear.

The fire, which reportedly occurred as the aircraft was touching down, was quickly put out on the runway and no one was injured, said airport spokeswoman Julie Rodriguez.

Southwest Flight 2511, with 127 passengers, had originated at Austin, Texas, officials said.
Rodriguez said the aircraft remained on the airport's north runway while passengers were taken to a terminal. The runway was expected to reopen later Monday.

Southwest Airlines spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger in Dallas had no information on the fire but said one of the plane's tires blew out. She said the cause of the blowout was still under investigation.

The aircraft was to be taken to a nearby Southwest maintenance facility so mechanics could inspect it, and Southwest would put another plane into service in its place, Eichinger said.

Sky Harbor's two south runways remained in service for landings and takeoffs.

Whew, if it had been the right front landing gear it would have been a close one...
What kind of jets do they fly over there anyway...

Talk about thread drift! From a flaming main gear wheel to politics in 3 posts? Wow.

Sounds like a locked brake from this armchair I'm sitting in...

Southwest birds need the extra traction for the hi speed cornering.
