In professional circles, that's called "going for an airplane ride". Also, be sure you wear a chute (and know how to use it).

I ended up at a place called Skyway in Kissimmee FL. Its pretty much the worst place in the world to work but I got to log right seat time in a Shorts. There are a bunch of these little fly by night places out there moving freight but you've got to be willing to suck it up for a while. Keep your ear to the ground and network with everyone. I wouldn't advocate paying for turbine time but frankly when it comes to getting the job recruiters could care less where you got the time. If you ride the right seat in the otter long enough is there a chance you could get a job someday?

I'm not sure, because the plane and pilot are contracted from Chicago for the winter only. If I was willing to move back to Chicago, possibly...

Why the chute? I don't know of any regulation in part 105 that precludes me from riding in the front. Wear a chute in case the insurance company asks questions?

If he was referring to flying the jumpers (parachute that is) then he is probably hinting at the maintenance practices of those operators. It was true at the place I flew for before joining the military. The planes were stripped of nearly everything to include the radios (used handheld ones instead) and it wasn't uncommon I was told for them to quite halfway to altitude Never happen to me thank goodness - but part of my inbrief was not to get outside of gliding distance to one of the three airfields around our little grass strip.
