Boeing Confirms More Nutplate Problems

We are currently working with the FAA and Spirit to determine what needs to be done to address the possibility of non-conforming nutplates on in-service airplanes.

Retrofit of all production airplanes, including 747/767/777, is being factored into the recovery plans following the IAM strike.

More from Flight Global:

Boeing admits nutplate problem on 747, 767, 777

Any engineers here?

How difficult would it be to undo/replace in service parts on jets not due for maintenance/overhaul?

The replacement of these nutplates could be difficult since nut plates are most commonly used in areas that have limited or no access. The plateing issue is not structural and very likely couldn't contribute to a problem for many years, corrosion would have to occur for it to become a problem. It appears the problem for boeing is the non compliance with the FAR's and of course that its going to cost them a great deal of money.

Wish it had. Nut plates? Ouch, sounds painful!

Do the nutplates get swollen with corrosion?

I'd have thought they'd be more inclined to fracture and split with corrosion?
