ACL65,
I will be pushed off the 75 in Atl. Can I MD to the 7er in NY or should I AE it? Can you MD to a higher category i guess is my real question.

It is my understanding that you can MD to any seat that has people junior to you on it.

There are 130 junior on it. 78 of which are regular line holders. It might be the better move anyhow espeically after adding another 17. Thanks

Let me expand on what Bucking Bar asked.

See what DAL is doing by parking 757's and 767's in the domestic market is two things. First, they are taking about 40 seat off of each segment. This reduces the supply available to the public to purchase, and effectively allows the higher prices to have less elasticity.
Currently we are flying 757's on routes like IND. Yes we are full, but to keep being full we would have to charge less. DAL's desire is to keep prices high and pull out capacity. By shifting the flying to the 9's, 320's and 88's they are not cutting frequency just ASM's. It allows them to offer the same service and convenience of a full domestic schedule with out having to much product in the market. (IMHO it is very smart, and this merger allows them to do this with out huge acquisition costs of like jets)
Secondly, by parking the 757's and 767's in VCV, they are put in warm storrage. They can be brought out quickly if needed. Problem is that long term many of those jets will need to go through a D check. Those take a lot of time. I would expect to see those start on those jets later this year to early next. By not accomplishing those now, they get to keep a 30 million dollar check off the books when the bookings and revenue flow is soft. It is just good economics in this very difficult time. Even if it means 15% pay cuts for some pilots.

IMHO if you want a line in NYC on the ER, figure out where the winter flying LOT's end. Take off a percentage point or two for good measure and bid a percentage.
Take a look at the lines though. Many of the junior line holders have lines that make commuting very difficult. IE three day, day or two off, six day, good chunk off, then two more three days, with a day or two off in between. That can make for a bad home life.

IMHO, make a decision on what is best for you and your family, not your ego.

I do understand that...but the pay is better, I live in VA and can drop mil leave for Navy reserve time at home. I will look at the %. I just wonder how many will go to NYC ahead of me on the 7ER. It's a bit of a crap shoot with the CAPN's and however many senior FO's ahead of me. Thanks again though.

I can tell you that most of the guys on the ER and 767 here in ATL will put NYC ERB before the 88. At least that is what I have been told by many of them to date.

Gladioslave 01-07-2009 09:27 AM

I am joining that club i guess. Are you effected by the surplus?

I hate to dispute something acl65 has said, because I know he's usually dead on...

But I called both the union and the company about this issue in July. They both told me there is no seat-lock for moving from a M88 base to a M88/90 base. In the past, it was a differences course, and therefore it was a 9 month seat-lock. Now, it's only a training CD, so it's not cost to them - hence, no more seat-lock.

But maybe don't take my word for it (too big of a consequence to rely on something that you read on the internet!). Call the Crew Resources and Planning people and ask them. They were really nice and helpful. :)

Well that is great. I did not know that. Plus, I do not want to find out!

I know that they stated the CVG guys got the lock when they converted.
