On.....during climb, cruise, or initial Descent, if W/X ahead, I play with WX radar and the overhead lights. During app, lights off! against SOP's but you get a better picture this way.

It depends. When I did night flights to Europe, the lights stayed on. There is nothing to see over the North Atlantic at night and it helps keep you awake. Now I do flights up to 16 hours long during the night and day and sometimes night again! The lights are on at night during cruise. The lights are out in my bunk when I'm sleeping.

When I did short domestic trips (like transcons) I could handle lights out for a few hours.

Depends on the situation.

If you have a long flight ahead of you in darkness, it's a good idea to have it on. Towards the end of the duty day, it's better to leave it off.

You'll get a better night's sleep that way.

I always kept the lights off. It is amazing the stuff you will see at night. Over the oceans, or in areas without a lot of residual lighting, the stars are amazing. The shooting stars are even better. Some of the coolest things I've even seen from a cockpit that didn't start wit the words "watch this" come from flying with the lights off and looking outside.
