I watched the indictment worthy pizpoor coverage live as the story broke. CNN said that they had been notified by FAA! 12 or 13 minutes into the portion of the broadcast that I recorded CNN claims that the airline itself contacted them.
CO's 777's do not have live TVs. CPDLC, HF & SATCOM
Brings up the question, "Is there a need to secure this type of information?" Short of sensitivity to the more than likely yet un-notified Captain's family what difference does it make? I can't see how it would be a security threat. One thing is for sure, we live in the information age.

There could be any number of peope who either leaked the information or intercepted communications.
Perhaps te contract in-flight medical support company leaked the information?
If I were the family of this Captain, I would sue CNN, Foxnews etc. for violating confidentiality laws. You then would quickly learn who the leaker was.
