Default Observation: UAL Stock Price

Has anyone else noticed? In the last 3 months, UAL stock price has almost quadrupled.

The question is: Why?

The biggest announcement in the last two weeks is that former FAA Administrator Jane Garvey is joining the Board of Directors.

I take it as a positive sign (stock price; ambivalent on Garvey), but I can't see any reason to support the rise.

You have to wonder how much the rumors of UAL/CAL merger in the fall has influenced it. The other reason could be the ol' short squeeze rationale. There are 31M shares shorted and the shorts are getting their a$$es handed to them. Having to buy shares to cover but at a premium. Just my dos centavos

All the airlines stocks have gone on a ride in this time frame, there has been numurous upgrades, positive articles on almost all the airlines and as much as this site does not reconize it that has included uaua. I hope you all have been buying some of the airline stoocks along the way. My favorites have been uaua cal and dal. Have not done amr but nice run yesterday until they diluted shares last night.

Well,
Hasn't Tilton said he is finally going to run an airline? Not shop it around? Also, the wonders on Wall Street have mystically determined UAUA isn't going away anytime soon, but didn't they say, just as mystically, that you were dead in the water a few months ago?? The powers that be are playing with the industry like a cat with ball of yarn.
Oh yea, fuel is down too.
These are all I can think of.

...meaning he wants a higher price, as he shops it around even more frantically.

...

Why is this bump happening in airline stocks? I think it's a) speculation about consolidation, and b) expecations of survival for another winter. Look at LCC, which also went up 17% when AMR announced the financing last week, and it seems rather obvious the market expects to be handed the Holy Grail: more consolidation.

For the foreseeable future, I guess stock prices jump at any hint of speculation, about the supposition of the inference of consolidation, maybe until the moment it doesn't happen. Gravely disappointed by our survival, they walk away, short United, bid up LUV. "Analysts" panick in face of the stock price drop, and three weeks later, they issue lower targets and offer dire warnings.

...or consolidation happens.

The rumor money changes hands on the news, and traders short United, and bid up LUV, while predicting the demise of the merged carriers. Analysts panick in face of the stock price drop, and three weeks later, they issue lower targets and offer dire warnings.

Of course, he does. I apologize for doubting his sincerity.

JP Morgan actually said something positive about United and that started the lift....BK was not likely and cash was better than previously forcasted or projected....Nothing like beating a company down with hype to get the stock price low then annnounce that they changed their predictions....hope you bought at $3.50 like I did.
