Republic Airlines runway incursion LAX
October 26, 2009 | 7:11 pm
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a runway incursion Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport in which two planes passed within 15 feet of each other, according to one witness. It’s just the type of safety problem that the airport’s new $83-million center taxiway was designed to prevent. Ian Gregor, an FAA spokesman, said Monday that the incident occurred when a Midwest Airlines Embraer E-190 passed the hold bars on a taxiway and came closer than it should have to a Northwest Airlines Boeing 757 taking off on the south side’s inner runway. Last June, LAX opened a 1.8-mile-long centerline taxiway between the two runways on the airport’s south side, where eight minor incursions have occurred since 2008. The new taxiway acts as a buffer zone where arriving aircraft can slow down and wait for clearance to cross the inner runway. --A Republic Airlines Embraer ERJ-190 on behalf of Midwest Airlines, registration N163HQ performing flight YX-1503/RW-1503 from Milwaukee,WI to Los Angeles,CA (USA), had landed on Los Angeles' outer southern runway 25L, needed to cross runway 25R to get to the terminal, but was instructed to hold short of runway 25R, while a Nortwest Airlines Boeing 757-300 registration N593NW performing flight NW-623 bound for Honolulu,HI took off from runway 25R. The Republic Airlines crew however continued past the holding point 200 feet from the runway edge prompting the tower to order the airplane to stop. The Northwest Boeing took off safely. The FAA opened an investigation and said, that the jets came within 100 feet of each other, radar recordings are currently analyzed to determine the exact distance. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/R...750Z/KMKE/KLAX http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N...156Z/KLAX/PHNL |
My guess is that the ground radar showed him over the line. We will once again wait and see what the facts are......

I know, really I did. Hence the wink....
Maybe not enough coffee for my dim humor to come out this early! |
Perhaps they felt being on the runway was safer than being parked on a parallel taxiway..............
