Bad cabin air

Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com

CNN has this video on bad cabin air, I was wandering if anyone on here has any stories like this. I know there's been several times that I wish I had a carbon monoxide tester on board after starting my engines.

Class action anyone?

I can certainly relate. Keep in mind your CO detector will likely not indicate a problem as the real issue is with TCP's. According to information I have, there is a detector that will warn of TCP's that has been available in Europe for several years now, but the European carriers are fighting having it installed on the flight deck as it will prove what many flight crews have been trying to warn managements of for years. Based on my experience, TCP's most often manifest themselves as a "dirty sock" smell. If you ever notice such a smell immediately go on 100% O2/smoke goggles and land as soon as possible. I hope this helps.

Prove it! Unfortunately it's not as easy as it sounds, but Dr. Clement Furlong at the University of Washington is fast closing in on proving the danger of TCP's, hopefully sooner than later.

I would like to know the results on a control group, I would be just as worried if not more so about the deicing fluid residue in the cabin. In the military we had an issue with a hydraulic leak mist into the cabin...with disasterous results for 2 crewmembers.

Deicing fluid can be just as bad, depending upon the type of fluid.

Are there commercially available affordable testers that can be purchased and carried by flight crews?

I've detected the "stinky wet sock" aroma in the past... if this is as serious as it seems I hope ALPA saferty picks up on it and provides some guidance sicne we know none of our companies will do anything until the lawsuits get more expensive than the fix...

a few ground evac's for stinky sock and wet dog should get some attention to the problem.

I've noticed this smell quite a few times on the EMB-145. I've been told it comes from mold residue in the packs. Now I'm not so sure. It's a very pungent smell.

And everybody thought Donald Douglas was overly paranoid with the DC-8.
