Ugh. Watch the video, but turn down the sound. Nothing but "disaster" reporting. I like how they have somebody from a medical consulting (Alina Medical) company talking about the properties of jet fuel and how "it could have exploded."

Some tidbits:

"...experts that have viewed the tape still wonder- how it is the two planes didn't explode on impact..."
"...thousands of gallons of fuel..."
"...out of control DC-9... Slams into the airbus, pushing it 60 feet..."
"...the collision is violent... jet fuel pours out... a single spark could have created a fireball..."

Pretty amazing how much momentum/mass the DC-9 has against the Airbus... it gave the plane a pretty good push.

Turn the sound off for this one. I am so sick of local news stations making up for their ignorance with hype and fear just to keep us tuned in.

Pretty scary, but then again, I had the sound on. I suppose one of the last words before impact was "duck!" They really nailed the Airbus. One question, if they we're having, or had, hydraulic difficulties, why were they taxying in at "speed"?

 

A better question would be, "why were they taxiing at all?" Better to just set the brake and let the company tow you in, than have the alternative happen. Might be a bit inconvenient, but I would guess that a full-blown NTSB investigation is worse...

 

You'd think they could have thrown out the TR's...don't DC-9s do powerbacks?

 

The hydraulic failure could have prevented the deployment of the buckets... I don't know enough about the DC-9s systems to tell.

 

Rick- I'm hazarding a guess based on what was said by those on the video; but I got the impression that the hydraulics failed suddenly and "completely" whilst there was very little time to react- even if they could've been deployed (which I read in Josh's previous post might not be doable with hydraulic loss), I'm guessing there wasn't a lot of time.

Bottom line- everyone wound up OK.
