I found this interesting that they only have two pilots on some of the long haul flights (definitely sound like they are far more than 8 hours). Any other foreign carriers do this?
Air Berlin, LTU Face Pilot Strikes
Air Berlin and its subsidiary LTU face so-called “warning strikes” in the next few days, as pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) tries to increase pressure on management in the ongoing negotiations.
The current conflict is mainly about work rules that VC wants to harmonize based on the better conditions at LTU, while Air Berlin currently adheres to legal limits. VC also wants enlarged crews on long-haul routes from Germany to the U.S. West Coast and Asia that are currently operated with two pilots only. The union claims LTU is one of only a handfull of carriers that does not add a third pilot on those routes, and does not provide rest facilities for cockpit crews.
Air Berlin says the strikes are “unusual and unnessecary” as official negotiations have not yet started. VC plans to stage three-hour walk-outs.
