Default International Jumpseat on CO

I'm hoping to jumpseat on Continental from EWR-LIS next month.

I'm not too worried about the gate agents in EWR, but am nervous about conveying the concept of "jumpseating" to the Portuguese-speaking gate agent(s).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I did LIS roundtrip on CAL two years ago. The EWR agents were very helpful, getting me on board very close to departure after TAP filled up.
In LIS, the agents were upstairs as I remember, they spoke English and did a great job. You will have to pay exit tax in LIS it was like 14 euro I think, leave enough Euro in your pocket for this as they did not accept greenbacks. Hope this helps. Look up please and thank you in Portuguese, it goes a long way. Obrigadu I think..

Thanks for the info. Did you have any issue with the APIS (Advance Passenger Information System) when returning to the states?

I have heard of gate agents not listing jumpseaters on this customs manifest, which can result in being interrogated when you show up stateside and your name does not appear on the list.

Also, if you have any recommendations on things to see/do in Portugal, I would appreciate any tips. Thanks!

I am not a pilot so can't help you with jumpseating protocol, but I've been to Portugal several times and my husband and I love it so much there that we came this close to buying a waterfront condo in the little town of Salema in the Algarve.

If you have the time, make sure to visit Porto up north. Do the port wine tours of all the wineries that dot the main road. Work your way south to Coimbra. Close to Lisbon are the must-see towns of Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the Algarve, we much preferred Lagos on the West to Faro further East. Try to visit Cabo Finisterre (Land's End).

Have fun eating the wonderful food, breads and fish spreads. Bacalhau a minhota. Sardinhas assadas. Caldierada. Cheeses. And of course, wines and port. Vinho Verde. Aguardente, if you are brave. My favorite meal was the stew of baby goat in red wine.

Gee, can I carry your luggage for you?

Porto is fun to see, so is Cintra (sp?) There is a college there which used to be a 1500's religious complex. Knights buried in the floors of classrooms and a real old library. We had no issues with customs. Drink the wine and eat the seafood, u can't miss
