Default PilotFAR is now iPad native

Just loaded the new version of PilotFAR which is now iPad native. It's a great app that contains CFR 14 (ALL the FARs) and then some. More info and links here: http://www.airlinepilotcentral.com/index.php

On a side note, I've been toying with the idea of claiming the iPad as work expense for taxes. My company stopped issuing individual pilots Jepps, and we now have the ship sets. All the Flight Handbook and FOM resources are available PDF files and work great on the iPad. All the flight pubs, FARs, and weather apps seems like a reasonable expense (deduction) although I don't want to waive the "audit me" flag. It would only be a $750 deduction so it's not worth the headache of a second look - anyone else have thoughts on claiming the iPad as a work expense? It's one of those nice to have devices, but clearly not required.

As I understand it, you can deduct unreimbursed expenses that are "ordinary and necessary." Necessary means that it is appropriate and useful in your work. The IRS does not say the expense has to be "required" in order to be deductible.

What is the opinion of your own CPA? I am normally very, very conservative, but I would think deducting the cost of your pad is ok.

Greetings HSLD,

Is the ipad approved as an EFB for your company? I have a macbook and I wrote it off last years as it is an FAA approved EFB, and our company also allows us to participate in an FAA EFB program to carry a bulk of our manuals on the laptop.

The ipad is currently not, at least at AA not approved as an EFB. They are working on it, and I have heard it will be very soon.

At that time I will probably get one, and write it off.

just my .2 cents.

There have been aircraft installed EFB tests over the years, but nothing is institutionalized for individual pilots to carry an EFB - laptop or otherwise. With a merger on the horizon I'm sure that pilot EFBs wont be a priority for quite some time.

Gotcha,

I completely understand why the priority is rather low... Good luck..

$9.99 is too expensive for a copy of something that's available for free.

the ipad is a certified EFB for nobody. Except maybe the part 91 guy flying his own airplane, who can argue he meets much less restrictive requirements for Part 91.

Good link,

I know our guys are working on getting it approved. I have a macbook (which I really like), i would love the portability of the ipad, but until it gets approved I just can't see spending the money to have one.

Best thing about the iPad is it stays in your bag through security.
