At airtran we have to put our bags in the overheads. If you dont use a bike chain and lock it to the bin it is will be stolen. I have a luggage works bag with my name in red on the handle. After the second time a flight attandant stopped it from walking off I started locking it. I would figure out how you want to lock it. atlanta is atlanta, if it can be stolen it will be stolen.

I don't think the electronic lock would fly. FAA approval would be lengthy and costly.
Heck, there's nothing in my bag to steal other than dirty socks and underwear. If you want it that bad, have at it.
Sure, I'd rather have my bag in the cockpit, but to me, this is not that big of a deal.
Besides, don't 737 FOs put their bag in the cabin, as well?

Usually either the CAPT or FO will use the forward closet although two rollaboards will normally fit in the cockpit. There are two shortcomings with 737 bag shortage - one major and one minor.
The minor issue is that two 26 inch bags will not fit correctly. By correctly, I mean they will physically fit but if you have two 26 inch bags you cannot lower and use the jump-seat. With only one 26 inch bag stored on the bottom you can still use the jump-seat.
The major 737 storage issue is to me, very significant. There is a little piece of horizontal metal for support on the forward side of the storage area that protrudes into the side of the bottom bag that will eventually ruin your bag. Every time you put your bag in and take it out it will rub and sometimes catch your bag or zipper and ruin it.
I had one bag damaged by a well meaning CAPT who try to pull my bag out after it snagged. Once I realized what happened I inspected my other bag and saw a lot of wear in the same spot. As a pro-active measure I actually sewed a piece of nylon over the wear spot.
NOTE - I always leave the side storage compartments empty. If you actually put anything substantial in there your big might not even fit.

Bingo! The only way to place 2 crew bags in that cubbie hole is to put them horizontally, and it is tough! I usually volunteer to stow mine in the FC coat closet. It's a bit more secure than any pax overhead bin.

To the Airtran pilot, that sucks. I wouldn't want to stow it in an overhead either, but a closet should be fine.

I've flown with a few FAs who have had things stolen on the flight I was on or others on their rotation. I am not comfortable with my bag being accessible to everyone....but we can brief the FAs and the other pilot to watch the compartment during deplaning. Of course, trying to get the h*ll out of the plane on your last leg in to catch a JS will suck now...
