Report: 3-hour rule creates more problems - Travel - News - msnbc.com
But the real problem is the failure to think outside the gate:
Not everybody paints such a dire picture. “The rule absolutely does not say you have to go back to the gate or cancel the flight,” says George Hobica of AirfareWatchdog.com. “It just says you have to let anyone off who wants to get off after three hours.” With appropriate systems in place and airport cooperation, he adds, “The airlines can get people on and off planes if they want to. They just have to have the willpower and the facilities.”
So you just have will anyone off the aircraft, and facilitize their return. It's all in how you cooperize and systemize. No need to gatefy, or cancelize, fool.

Amid the debate, Kevin Mitchell takes what amounts to the middle ground — both the airlines and the government, he says, are at fault — and something of the long view. “The whole first year of this is going to be plagued with spikes in cancellations and displaced passengers,” says the chairman of the Business Travel Coalition. “But a year from now, it’ll be a non-issue because the airlines will have found there are many ways to adjust for it. It’s not in their long-term interest to cancel flights.”
I love airheads. "I am in the middle," says Kevin Mitchell with a soft whisper you'd most often find on PBR, "I neither am here, nor there, I blame somebody, and that somebody is... everybody. But I don't blame you, I blame them." He squirms in his chair, proud of himself. "Airlines will find a way to solve this, we just need to understand that eventually they will find canceling a flight that barely made money anyways to be far more expensive than a $4 million dollar on the spot fine and thus, I predict" his whisper voice increases to barely audible "that airlines will soon have mile long jetbridges that can pull be attached to an airplane in the midst of a 3 hour taxi and let that passenger off to safety. And that a ramp crew will immediately locate their bag, remove it and hand it to the one passenger that wanted off. That would only take a minute or two to do and its worth it."

I think, my friend, that you have been spending too much time drinking on your days off! Perhaps you meant to say PBS? PBR is a delicious nectar of the Gods!
Token on topic comment: yeah, there are going to be a lot of cancellations. I'm not gonna stay out there knowing that I could cost my company a couple million. So if we're out there for three hours, THEN we have to get back? What if it takes half an hour to get back to your gate, and then another half an hour to wait for your gate to open/rampies to arrive?
