So I'm tryin to get to BKK in November and noticed both United and Delta operate flights from NRT. Problem is I'd be jumpseating from the US into NRT. How much time would I need between connections? Can I have them list and check me in in either ATL or ORD for the connection? I noticed the United flight originates in ORD but has a change of equipment in NRT. Can I just make a jumpseat reservation on the ORD flight and continue to BKK as long as a seat is available? Thanks for the help.

 

Before you leave the US, list for the flights that you'd like to JS on, and that goes for both DL and UA.

After you land in NRT, approach the transfer desk, and politely tell them you're trying to OMC (UA) to BKK, or Jumpseat (DL) to BKK. There'll probably be some taxes involved which you'll pay with your credit card, and then they'll issue you a seat request card so you can wait at the gate house.

I think you'll need no less than 1 hour to go through the security check and go back up to the departure level. So the normal transit time for most passengers should work for you as well.

I don't believe they can check you in all the way from the US to BKK, you'll have to check-in again at the transfer desk in NRT. And know that for the DL side of things, the gate agents are still adjusting to the new changes from nwa to DL, so be patient, but consistent. I'd recommend you introducing the outbound flight crew when they check in at the counter, so hopefully they'll speak up and help you if needed. I've never got any trouble from UA agents in NRT, and they'll assign you a "nice" seat if available.

Thanks for the reply. Thats the info I was looking for. Plenty of info on here about international jumpseating in and out of NRT but noone discussed transiting through NRT.

 

Any info about checking baggage? Do they check them all the way through BKK or do you have to claim the luggage and then recheck in?

I posted an almost identical thread on the 5th with no answer, and it still was not addressed in this thread. When transiting through Narita you have to clear a security checkpoint before you even reach the airline transfer desks. At this security checkpoint you need to have something to prove you are a transiting passenger. This becomes the tricky part for your connection as a jumpseater. You wont be able to get anything printed off in the states regarding your next jumpseat attempt to BKK to show at the transit checkpoint.

I just got back from Indonesia via NRT yesterday and had listed myself on a family friends UA companion pass, and checked in for the NRT-SFO sector in TPE to prove to NRT transit security I was had an onward ticket and had no problem. Had the flights actually been open where I could have jumpseated, I would have asked the agent to remove me from the DM list and put me back on as an OMC. But I was not that lucky and had to take the $218 hit on the pass. You could do almost the same thing with a ZED fare with UA/DL, and once at the gate in NRT, just ask to ride OMC. In reality this is your best option because going through NRT without a ZED to back up on NH or JL is insane in case you hit one of those ruts where each flight has 30 plus non revs like what I just witnessed this week.

 

At NRT they always let me pass through the connecting flight security checkpoint just by flashing my crew badge. If you are in uniform they wont even look at your ID. The only time I had issues in the past
is when we were in Term 2 and I had to ride the transfer bus. I would avoid it if possible but if you check bags you WILL have to pick them up yourself and go through immigrations and customs as this can make your connection iffy. (Standing in a number of what can be very long lines at the ticket counter security, and immigration.)

Don't forget your boarding pass from your flight of origin. Same day transfers used to be free but they instituted a transfer fee of about 1500 yen
or something, but better than the full 2030.

 

i went to bkk earlier this year through nrt on DAL out of lax. I didnt have a problem when i went through the security check point. The gate agent checked me in for my nrt-bkk flight at the gate in lax. The transfer fee was 18 usd going there, i think 40ish coming back. Not a bad deal at all for bizz class. I had my jumpseat slip when i went through the security checkpoint, but i cant remember if i needed it then. I wasnt in uniform. hope this helps... good luck.
