$ Delta Pilots Mutual Aid worth it? $
#31
A friend of mine called me yesterday. He gave me the "low-down" on our Disability benefits and DPMA. I have come across a lot of confused pilots when asking about Long/short term disability. So I will share it with you, on what he found out.
We have:
Short Term Disability until 26 weeks. With DPMA, you will get up to or close to 95% pAY (tax free).
If you are in need of more disability, at 27 weeks Long Term Kicks in.
Long term disability kicks in until you retire at 65 years old. The payout is 50% (not sure of the exact amount).
So we are covered, as DAL pilots. There is an ALPA handout that describes the percentages.
I hope this helps.

TD starts on your sick event day (1st day you call in) and lasts for 26 weeks. Then becomes regular disability. You must use all your sick leave first. Then Disability pays 50% of the average of your highest consecutive 12 of the last 36 months gross pay. This portion is taxable.
Dpma pays you approximately half of your NET monthly earnings. This portion is not taxable.
Dpma can be used for a total of 24 months but no more than 12 months per event.
For sure a no brainer, I am looking at being on Td and DPma for about 2 to 3 months and will receive much more than I have paid in for just one short event.
Good Luck.
