Speeding Tickets . . .
It may be out there somewhere but I can't find it. . .
Can anyone tell me the policy on sppeding tickets? Do they hurt you? I unfortunatley have a total of 5 in 16 years. However, 2 of them in the last 3 years (1 of which was 3 months ago). Is this going to hurt me? I put them all an the apps, I'm not trying to hide anything but I don't have a good feeling about them. I am scheduled for a 737 type and if these tickets are going to kill my chances I wonder if it's worth the 8G's. Thanks |
I was worried about the same thing, I have 3 speeding tickets in 16 years with the most recent one about 3 years ago. I have an interview with SWA in a couple weeks so I guess they weren't too concerned. That being said, I'm sure they aren't psyched about them or else they wouldn't ask. I do know of a guy who was interviewed and hired with 5 tickets on his record. Just some frame of reference for you, I don't know what the official stance is. Good luck!

HCDAW . . . Thanks hopefully it won't hurt me. Do you have a type?
Any one else on the tickets question? |
skiutah:
I have had my share of tickets and had two in the same month this year, but they are under the 10 mile an hour rule here where I live which equals 0 points and not placed on my DMV record. I did list them however on my Southwest app and interviewed last month. (Don't hide anything. Be open and honest even if they won't show up) In all total, I had about 5 listed and it was never brought up. They hired me and I'm currently swimming in LUV's pool. The interview is a great experince and they know we are human. Don't beat yourself up over it. Have fun with the type. HPA? |

Tickets may not prevent you from getting a job, but they do not help. |

Thanks One day, heading to the interview in a rental car (going the speed limit), I was almost run over and cut off by a maniac going at least 30 mph over the posted 55 mph limit; weaving in and out of traffic. I got a good look at the guy. Turned out, he was one of the capts on the interview panel that day. |

Where the hell do you live that you get pulled over when you are doing less than 10mph over the limit?!
Conneticut will give you one for 4 above the limit. I got one for 59 in a 55. I was coasting downhill on a bridge on Interstate 95. I saw the cop, looked at my speedometer and didn't hit the brakes because it was no big deal. I was wrong. |
Not too long ago, a couple of SWA managment types were talking trash about their hot cars. As I recall one had a Porshe and the other a souped up Mustang.
Their bravado led to an impromtu drag race on the asphalt beside the sim/training center building. One of them lost control and did a Burbank through the chain link airport security fence and slid out into the airport grounds almost onto a taxiway. The Feds weren't too happy nor were these two guy's bosses. One is still a mucky-muck. The other "decided" it was time to go back on the line. |

I got two tickets in the same week - both on I-10 between no-mans land and no-man's land in west Tx....I now drive a few miles below the speed limit everywhere...I did't like the increased insurance premium one bit...

They are more intersted in DUIs rather than the infrequent speeding ticket.
|
No DUIs...No record at all - I was arrested once for tresspassing as a teenager in 1989. No charges / nothing- cops did it more to scare me straight than anything. Glad they did...I'll put it down on the application if asked along with the two tickets...Don't think it should be a problem...

Speeding tix.
Wouldn't worry about it at all. My speeding ticket list is extensive (7 in 2 years). Just tell them why, etc. You know the drill. If you are an excellent candidate, they are not going to send you home based on speeding tix. Believe it or not, good pilots still get hired with DUI's. (1 in your lifetime is acceptable, 2? then worry).
Get hired by SWA and go fly. Have fun!!! |
Skiutah, I do have the type rating. Don't sweat the cost, if you are serious about SWA that is, think about it as your higher education. I was hung up on the money for a little while, but then I realized it's costing a small fortune to put my wife through law school, so if you look at the cost in terms of follow on education it's not so bad. Of course I could be singing a different tune if I don't make the cut. Hope it all works out for you.

1) SWA was your first choice. 2) You obviously failed that interview. 3) If SWA wouldn't hire you, why should XYZ airline? 4) If they do hire you, how long before you quit to go work for your dream company (SWA)? I won't get the type until it is obviously my last resort. |
I have to completely disagree with you Rick, I am by no means an expert, but I have many friends who have the type rating and were subsequently hired by UPS, FedEx, Airtran, JetBlue, and Continental after both successful and unsuccessful interviews with SWA. It may be different depending on what your background is, but I can tell you that the standard for the military instructors I work with is to go get the type with the ATP. Of course that only makes sense if you want to fly for SWA, so I guess it depends on where your priorities are. Just my two cents.

Companies ask because it show's that you "don't follow the rules" (Laws or FAA regulations). They want responsible pilots that follow FAA regs and company SOP (standard operating procedures).
Tickets may not prevent you from getting a job, but they do not help. On the other hand....going fast at SWA is a positive trait...anyone tried to keep up with a SWA 737?...........Ripper |

Those SWA buggers love to fly slow at altitude and fast at low altitude. I always had to slow from about .87 to .76 when in trail with a SWA 737 to which sometimes I thought was a citation in disguise. So practiced my slow flying techniques on final in my 727. I LUVED flying at minimum approach speed from about 10 to 15 miles out with a SWA on my tail, provided no other traffic was in the pattern. And remember you should never taxi at a speed greater than a brisk walking pace... especially with a SWA on your tail... afterall you don't want to be rear ended by a tailgater if you should have to come to a sudden stop:D. Alas those good old days are gone. Now I am on the -800... no more .87 cruise and higher approach speeds too.:( |

Remember that a 737 type with NO operational experience will raise serious red flags with any other airlines you apply to...

Then it is reasonable to expect that SWA was not your first choice. |
