Default Questions from a board newbie

I've been lurking this board since the Comair crash at LEX, since I only fly Delta and often the RJ's (I wanted to get the real info). First off, thanks for the wealth of info on this site and to the admins for doing a great job (I help moderate a cigar BB, www.herfersparadise.net, so I know how tough it is).

Secondly, I know Delta has had it rough the last year or so, and I just wanted to say thanks to the crews. It's often a thankless job, and I try to make it a point to make your life easy while I'm on board and to thank you for a job well done. I have noticed the cabins are much cleaner than last year as are the planes (dunno why a dirty exterior bugs me, but it does).

Anyway, after just completing a 6 leg trip (two of them through ATL with multi hour delays because of the damn repaving), I have a couple of questions.

1. What is that protuberance under the tail of a 767? It looks like the front of a snowmobile (a ski with a shock absorber attached).

2. While landing last night at LAX in a 1990 757(the window was date stamped), I saw sparks flying around the starboard engine while the thrust reverser's where engaged. Is this normal?

3. How far apart do you guys have to be at cruising altitude? 45 minutes east of SLC we made a quick correction to the right and less than a minute later I watched another Delta 757 zoom by the port window. It was close enough I could see it was the old paint scheme and almost read the N#.

4. While sitting in the very last seat of a 767 (never again since I made Platinum, I hope) I could see the con trail. Is that normal? I always thought the con trail only showed up well behind the plane.

5. While landing at MSP, during the day, in unl vis, and sitting in 1B, I heard the warning voice say "auto pilot, auto pilot", while we were about 100ft off the deck and maybe a quarter mile from the end of the runway. Does it always do that or did they forget to turn the AP off?

Sorry if these are inane questions, but when you spend as much time as I do flying, your mind wanders.

One last thing, I'm betting Delta will turn it around and be a success by buying a 1000 shares of DALRQ today.

I think you're refering to the tail skid. It helps protect the plane in case of a tail strike. If your angle on takeoff and/or landing is too high, you can hit the tail. It is serious, you don't want a tail strike.

Doesn't sound like it. I'm not sure what was happening, but then I don't get that view too often.

Only 1000' of vertical separation is needed now. It's called RVSM above 29,000'. The airplanes have to have the right equipment to fly RVSM. That includes thing like good altimeters and traffic collision avoidance systems. Lateral separation is based on altitude and speed and is a function of air traffic control.

4. While sitting in the very last seat of a 767 (never again since I made Platinum, I hope) I could see the con trail. Is that normal? I always thought the con trail only showed up well behind the plane.

Not normally, but the contrail depends on atmospheric contidions which varies greatly. Most of the time there is no contrail.

When the autopilot is turned off automatically OR by the pilots it does this. It is a warning system and it is normal. If they click it off via the yoke button more than once really fast, it cancells the warning. Most airlines do not want you to do this, so both pilots know for sure that some one is "hand flying" the plane. The 757/767 can autoland with the autopilot on, but most of the time we land it ourselves.

Sorry if these are inane questions, but when you spend as much time as I do flying, your mind wanders.

Remember DELTA stands for "doesn't even leave the airport". Fly Continental!:D

Thanks for the answers. Dunno if I've been lucky this year or not, but out of 63K miles so far this year(all domestic, ugh), I can only recall three Delta caused delays/late arrivals or departures. However, with all the problems with ATL, I think I'm screwed for the rest of the year.

#1: The 767-300/400s are 'stretched' and have a longer fuselage, so there is a hydraulically powered "Tail Skid" located at the lower aft end of the fuselage to protect the hull from damage if the aircraft were over-rotated or had a tail-strike on landing. It is raised/lowered with the Landing Gear.

#2: Not sure if you were actually on a '1990 757', although it is possible. The window could be older or newer than the actual aircraft. Sparks aren't normal, but definately possible, when engines go into reverse or steel brakes are engaged.

#3: ATC normally spaces aircraft 1000' above or below opposite direction traffic, so likely the airplane you saw was 1000' seperated, even though it looked closer.

#4: You can almost always see the contrail sitting aft of the wing-mounted engines. In a 747, look out the R5 or L5 door window, you can see them real well.

#5: I'm guessing you were in an MD-88, because there is a female nagging voice annunciator that tells you you pressed the "AutoPilot Disconnect" switch, but need to press it again to silence it. This is normal when pilots disconnect the A/P and hand-fly.

Keep in mind that the one of the last steps of Chapter 11 is to cancel all outstanding shares and reissue new shares in the restructured corporation. Unless you're buying short, you may want to reconsider the buy and hold strategy with a bankrupt airline.

If you bought 1,000 shares of DALRQ, SELL THEM RIGHT NOW!!!
DO NOT WAIT ANY LONGER!!! SELL THEM RIGHT NOW!!!

If you bought 1,000 shares @ .84 cents a share (what the stock was at on Thursday), it would have cost you $840. When Delta exits bankruptcy, those stocks will be WORTHLESS!!!

But for some reason, Delta's stock is up to $1.10 a share. That means you made about $260!!! Sell it now. SELL IT NOW!!! You got lucky. This will never happen again. It will probably go down some more, until it finally goes to 0! It will go to 0.

Ryane chill out. I did buy 1K shares at .85 cents and when I saw the next day there were up to $1.19 I managed to sell them at $1.17. I think they finished the day at about $1.05.

DALRQ has been showing some interesting activity in the last few days. It closed at 1.50 today.
