Default Why Delta Still Lives in The Dark Ages

When I read about what Alaska Airlines is doing with iPads in the cockpit, I am reminded again how underdeveloped, technically deficient and willfully ignorant Delta Airlines Flight Operations Dept. truly is.

First of all, it's Delta Air Lines.

And second...

Q: How many fNWA pilots does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Six. One to change the bulb. And five to tell you how great the old bulb was.

And third...

Yes, you had some things that were better. For example, it sounds like your flight planning system was better. And you had some automation with your scheduling system that was better. But there are many things I like better about the way Delta does flight ops. For example, I like to have the discretion to use my experience and judgment when I'm operating an aircraft. Standardization is great and very important... but you can cross the line with too much standardization to the point that you're micromanaging everything. So why don't you give it a rest with the Delta sucks stuff? If you see things that you think need to change, then make the suggestions to your chief pilot. Sorry, but I'm just tired of the whining.

Rant over.

Airside kits are a stepping stone to EFB's. Listen to Mike Galusha, Delta's General Manager of Ops Information, Publication and Distribution.

Flight Ops 411 podcast, 8 Mar 2011:

It will happen...it will likely be more comprehensive then what Alaska has.

We have 50 EFBs on the line right now for testing...some are iPads, some are other tablet PCs and laptops.

Plus the fleet is a lot larger than Alaska Airlines and I thought we had guys testing the iPads on the line?

Also, there was a rush to SOC which inherently meant pick one existing certificate and get everyone to conform to it. That does not mean we won't go and adopt nwa's better stuff. But don't expect that to happen overnight either, they're probably tweaking, improving or overcoming asset and technology hurdles. nor would every nwa be the highest priority for flt ops but it doesnt mean it's shelved either. we're in what year of the merger?

Btw, from experience the lowliest air carrier certificate (single pilot part 135) can take 6 months or more with the FAA so id imagine a clean sheet certificate for the worlds largest flag operation wouldve taken eons. This was probably the wisest path short and long term.

There are currently 35 DAL pilots scattered among the fleets/seats testing the iPad as described in the Alaska article.

Heyas,

I'd call that a pretty gross mischaracterization, especially for guys who never flew under the system and have an annoying fixation on the heading bug.

I like to think of it as having all your crayons in the 64 count set in one box, instead of having the same 8 crayons in 4 different boxes, and each guy has a slightly different set.

Sure there were more crayons, but how you colored was still up to you, and the guy you flew with had the same set.

Nu, I didn't come with a fixation with the HDG bug but my sim partner just kept saying "SA! SA! SA! SA!"

And I was like, "essay?"What is "essay?" Is this spanish? I have no idea what you're talking about... oh the HDG bug? Yeah, low on my priorities right now, I'll get it in a minute and I'll use it when it matters but right now I don't care as we are doing FMS drills at 25,000 in a SIMULATOR. He took it upon himself to scream SA the rest of our training if the bug wasn't moved prior to anything else being done. I don't like "SA".

I like that!! Can I borrow it

Yes, I too get a kick out of guys who never flew under our system and only know about it from a buddy who had a buddy tell them about it (from the south of course). I've given up, I just smile and wave boys smile and wave.

As for the heading bug.........geeze they got me doing it too now! I always was kinda anal (perfect formation positions are a beautiful thing) but after I fix it more than once a minute I start to wonder about myself
