Pilots with Beard
Hi, I had a question. I read something today online, pretty interesting. i wanted to know, is it true that airline pilots cannot have beard because the oxygen mask won't form a perfect seal. Can anyone tell me more about that. I mean is there a law that bans the pilots from having beard, or is it an airline thing. And are the airlines very strict about this rule.

The Beard Question
I'm just an aspiring pilot, who's doing some scanning of the forums....
As for the beard question, I don't know who allows/doesn't allow beards because of the oxygen mask question.
I was a volunteer firefighter for 7 years, and we weren't allowed to have facial hair, if we were going to be qualified for interior firefighting operations, which requires the use of an SCBA mask, because the facial hair got in the way of the creating of a good seal. You weren't prohibited from growing one, but you couldn't do any interior operrations with one....so, it almost begs the question...
Many fire departments outright prohibit the growth of facial hair, as well as other things like tobacco use, etc.
Anywho, that's a little info from another industry.
