Nobody said they did that. It is true, however, that airlines in the past have hired and had classes start only to furlough days later. We did it at AWA in 92 when management said there would be no CH 11 filing.

Will they hire? Yes, because this merger will not happen next week. They are short, from what I hear. Also, Dec 2012 and FT/DT is quickly approaching....

They'll hire in the fall again because they need bodies to cover attrition. When the deal closes I would think/hope that street hiring would be suspended in favor of recalling AA furloughs (not to mention our own remaining 49 furloughs on the West). When that is done, expect hiring to restart and continue for quite some time. Preliminary figures show 2000 retirements for combined US/AA through 2017, and they don't slack off after that. Somebody has to keep the airline flying.
Preliminary tea leaf reading seems to indicate no to furlough anyone, but even if they did, based on the above it wouldn't be for long.
