I know it's not an approach but the Obstacle DP departure from Rwy 3 at SMO when LAX is landing west is fun
+1 for VOR 13L at JFK with a new FO and watch him age right in front of your eyes |
The approach to NAS North Island via one of the ILSs to Lindbergh (KSAN) can be interesting. Pylon turn on the SAN terminal to a one mile final at max landing weight in C-5.

Any approach in Africa during IMC. (Self directed approaches are fun!)
Meigs Field (before that a-hole destroyed it). Especially at night, coming in from the East, over the water. ILS28 at KORD, on a clear night. The view from the left seat has always been my favorite. Kabul, Khandahar, Bastion. At night. Lights out until about 50'. TCAS alerts from all the UAV's and other friendlies all the way in. Sometimes, fireworks. Pretty much any airport in the CIS. Like Africa, but in meters and with heavy Russian accent comrade. MIA ILS09 dodging thunderstorms and Eagle bug smashers. |

I'll piggy back on the Afghanistan approaches, especially going into Bastian and Salerno. Ever been to Manas (Bishkek)? Dropped into there one night, thankfully during VMC, when the controller forgot we were at 8000 feet and 10 miles from the field when a squeaky, broken English, female controller states, "ReachXX, let us know when established on Localizer." We didn't get vectors or anything. We requested a 360 to get down and established and on short final, my copilot...who was also my boss, states,"Hey sweetheart, can you put your dad on the radios?". We all laughed while there was no response from her. The Russian chick who worked the baseops there was smoking' as well! |
Haven't been to Bishkek (yet), but it does remind me of Iquique, northern Chile.
80 miles north of the airport, FL280, we got "Challenge Cargo cleared for ILS 18" No further communication from "control" until on 3 mile final, when we were instructed to contact tower. Good times. |

Telluride was always fun on a clear day when they let you drop in over the mountain rather than coming up the canyon...
Also for us lucky few that got to land in Princeville, Kauai... That is a rush in a jet... |
Rwy 15 departure at DCA with a left turn up the Anacostia river is a cool one
|
ASE was already mentioned but I'll second it. EGE is also nice when it's VMC. Hailey, ID is pretty as well. SMO in a jet is.. interesting with the short runway.
The most attention getting one for me might have been Taos, NM. It's 5800x75 runway at 7800 msl. First time in there in a Citation X got my attention rapidly with a 120 kt ref, nearly 80 degree day putting our ground speed at touchdown somewhere between stupid and max tire groundspeed. Getting out was equally fun. 5000 lb gas and 2 pax put us at max weight to meet the climb gradient. |
BOS Visual 27, Circle 33R. No creeping Left of the 27 centerline for 33L traffic.
Or the BOS ILS 4R, Circle 15R. |
